When campfires were first introduced in Minecraft snapshot 19W02A, the minecraft.net article showing off its features hinted to noteblocks, and I know that this is kinda irrelevant now, but I'm just hoping for someone to clear my confusion. Taken from the article (https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-snapshot-19w02a), it says:
CAMPFIRES
Come one, come all, and toast your buns around the campfire!
Decorative fireplace without fire spread
Cooks up to four foods, but slowly
Acts as a smoke signal you can see very (VERY!) far away when a hay bale is below (hint: think note blocks!)
Cosy light source
Can be lit/unlit
I've seen some videos previewing and showing off the snapshot, and none of them seemed to know what the hint meant either. My only guess is that. like noteblocks, the functionality of a campfire changes depending on the block underneath it. Does anyone know what it's supposed to mean?
There isn't anything extra or secret in that line, although I can see why you would think that based on how they wrote it. All it means is that if a Hay Bale is directly under a campfire block, the smoke it generates will go up 25 meters. If you don't put a Hay Bale underneath, the smoke only goes 10 meters. This is similar to how putting different blocks beneath a Note Block changes the instrument.
The "hint" is just a reference to how the mechanic works, where the block's function changes based on the block directly beneath it.

The hay bale under the campfire for smoke I was familiar with but after reading it over I checked with food on a campfire and none on a campfire and the sound from Noteblocks does change (unless I'm thinking things) which I didn't noticed before (not one that uses Noteblocks but was curious).
I tried with pork and kelp besides, Kelp blocks, Wood and Wood Planks to hear the different sounds. I'd say give it a try. But either way most people would point out Campfire Hay Bale smoke height increases and the Campfire's introduction in snapshot videos from what I remember.

Lol, thanks. I was curious about that for quite some time, I just never got an answer.
