My friends and I have a LAN world but none of our mob farms work properly when more than one of us is online because of mob cap. Is there any way to increase mob cap with a mod or something so they can work.
This has nothing to do with the mob cap; in fact, the game adjusts the mob cap based on the number of chunks loaded by all players (within a 17x17 area around each player), so it can be up to twice as high with two players, 10 times higher with 10 and so on:
In single player mode, there are always 289 chunks in range so the caps above are used. In multiplayer, chunks that are in range of multiple players are counted only once. More chunks and higher mob caps result from the players spreading out more.
Rather, it is because the other players have not spawnproofed the area around them so mobs can freely spawn and fill up the cap - this is the ugly reality of mob farms in multiplayer, which will only work well if all players cooperate (conversely, if you had multiple players who have all spawnproofed the areas around them and one player decides to go caving or something they will be ambushed by an insane number of mobs. The only way to really solve these issues is to have each player have their own personal mob cap).
Also, another issue could be the server view distance (same as the render distance in single player), where if it is less than 10 mobs won't despawn properly within the automatic despawn distance and fill up the cap, although if you haven't changed that it probably isn't the issue.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
