I really hate the look of stray blocks floating around in the air around my base. I try to pillar up and bash them from the sky every time I see one. Not talking here about floating masses, but just 1-2 blocks or so out in middle of nowhere in the air.
Floating blocks? Like randomly spawning? That's even a thing?
They are referring to things like this, which sometimes occurs in more rugged terrain (there is a single block at cloud level to the left of center, as well as two blocks next to each other to the right, with two larger bits, one with trees, between them):
Unless you are in Amplified or customized terrain though this usually isn't very common (the above was from a modded world with what might be called semi-Amplified/Beta 1.7.3-ish terrain; most non-flat biomes have a much greater amount of height variation with x-hills often exceeding cloud level; I already found two mountains going to y=156 and y=165).
The Wiki even includes them under "generated structures", although unlike most of the things listed they are not intentionally generated by some code (for example, normal tunnel-like caves are intentionally generated but not the "hollows" they mention after floating islands, which are simply due to the noise used to generate terrain causing a pocket of air underground): http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Generated_structures#Floating_.22island.22

Yeah, I'm not in a modded world, but they generally show up mostly in 'Extreme Hills' biomes. Unfortunately, thats about my favorite type of landscape for building in so I get to see a lot of them. Just knocked down 4 sets of them ( 1-5 blocks each) around my current base.
By the way, I like that floating bit with the trees on it in your pic. Thats just fine, wish I had one like that mear my base, it's those small ones that annoy me.
Has anyone watched the original Mianite series? They had one in their Savannah Plateau M biome that they called "The North Star" and I think even decorated it with glowstone.

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird would be able to cross the entire Minecraft world in just shy of 17 hours.

Funny you say that. I built a glowstone ball (actually a cubooctahedron) up in the air about 120 blocks above my current base. It looks really neat at night. Surprisingly less bright than I expected though.
I hate floating blocks, too. Large floating islands are tolerable, but small ones drive me nuts. When I'm exploring an area and I see a floating block, I switch to creative mode (/gamemode c) so I can fly up and destroy it! I play vanilla survival and switch back to survival (/gamemode s) after I destroy the floating blocks, but I've decided that "cheating" by switching to creative doesn't "count" as long as it's just to fix a world generation error.

Just a small personal peeve.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
