At points in time i'm playing on my single-player world and I would see a name tag behind the a wall or under me. It comes and goes so fast I just can't see what it says.
I could see how someone would see a name tag when your surrounded by snow because of the texture but I once saw it in a cave.
I suppose it could be a side effect from the game if you play it for a while but MINECRAFT doesn't have the most realistic lighting and most side effects that come from games are due to lighting.
I used to think I was experiencing this, and after a while I noticed it was the slightest occurrence of screen tearing causing a black right angle to appear in my peripherals, which I assumed was a name.
Turn Vsync on or lower your settings for a smoother framerate, or else your comp just does that sometimes. I learned to ignore it after a while as Vsync causes a lot of mouse lag for me
I have to agree with most of the posters here. I've often seen what I thought were name tags in SSP, especially after mining stone blocks or ores. It's just a trick on the mind.
