I take spanish imersion at school. in spanish united states is estados unidos. so its EE.UU. why? that makes no sense. its basically saying estados estados unidos unidos. it should be E.U. explain why u think its that way or if u know why please tell me. I asked my teacher. she said nothing

Because the words "estados" and "unidos" are plural words and according to the Spanish language rules, when using acronyms for plural words you double the first letter.
That's why "Estados Unidos" - E.E.U.U
