I made a few high-detail concept artwork based on a few of the mobs in Minecraft which i thought could use an improvement perhaps, so they would fit better in the world. Maybe Notch will consider these, maybe not, but they came out well and i like em. Also, i'll be writing my theory as to what i think the critter is and how it works.
The Creeper
The creeper was a hard one to reinvent. I had no idea whether or not it was an undead or not, but i took into concern it's four( ? ) legs and played around with the thought that maybe it's a collection of several skeletons all conjoined together. As for how the damn things work, i theorize that they rise out of deep sedimentary caverns that are chock full of coal, sulfur and fossils. In my rendition, the creeper has highly flammable fossil fuels packed in it's chest, stuff like block powder and maybe flint, to help 'ignite' it should it be struck by a steel blade or arrow.
I'd imagine the thing to wheeze and cough a lot due to having this stuff in it's chest.
I didn't have much thinking to do when giving the zombie my rendition, i just decked him out in appropriate medievil attire such as a maille hauberk, kite shield and bearded axe. Although i was too lazy to colour, if notch was to implement this design, the skin on the zombie should be a decayed brown with grey hair. The maille would be rusty, and maybe some paint has worn off on his shield.
Again, didn't have much thinking to do with this one, just added a torn kilt, VISIBLE bow ( when i first ran into these guys i thought they were melee, boy was i wrong lol) some leftover hair and a quiver 'o arrows. IF this were coloured, i think the bones should be a sort of old yellowish tone.
Oh these were done pretty hastily, and intended these to be seen by notch, mostly i'd like to see that creeper i did in game, and think it probably wouldnt be too hard to implement ( just take the skeleton, add horns, an extra arm and four legs, right?) and the only tough task might be animating it.
As far as reference goes, i own a few pieces of medievil equipment, and have had some hands on experience with a few antique armours.
As for the Zombie, i'm a fairly good skinner, if notch will give me the Zombie template, i'll be more than happy to do it for him
Also if i recall correctly, the zombie is based off the player model right? i could probably skin up that zombie right now.
Alright, here's a Zombie skin based on my concept art for player use, and is probably easily protable to the Zombie mob as well.
I tried to do rusty chainmaille, but i just couldnt get the colours right, and would look plain weird. I instead went for a sort of darkened maille look and it came out pretty good i'd like to say.
The face took a really long time to just get right, skeletal/gaunt faces are hard to make in Minecraft.
