You'll typically get the Out of Memory PermGen error if you use a lot of plugins like me. Through some investigation, I found the solution. I see a lot of posts about this, but haven't seen an answer yet, so here you go.
I use MagicLauncher, but some of you might be using bats or the java config tools available to you. To fix this error, simply add this to the Parameters in the advanced setup tab of Magic Launcher:
-XX:MaxPermSize=128m
The default is 64m, so doubling this amount should be enough. Setting -XMX higher or giving more memory in MagicLauncher isn't enough to fix this OOM error, so you'll need this line set even if you assigned 16GB of memory to Java.

Thank you very much. I started getting this error this morning when I added a dozen more mods - now totaling over 100. It took care of the problem nicely.
I feel your pain brother! (sister? haha). I forgot to insert this again while loading up minecraft and kept crashing. Adding it in fixed it and I was able to load up perfectly!
You guys are insane! If you have +100 mods its obvious that you will run out of memory! lol. Try getting a super computer. xD
I have done this and it has fixed the problem but now I have another memory error, this time java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space.
(I have only just started to use magic launcher and I have 139 mods(1.4.7))
That means java ran out of memory. It either means it didn't work or you don't have enough memory to assign. You could try increasing the java memory by other means but make sure you dont assign more than 75% of all your memory. There are a lot of tutorials on how to do it all over the forums.
Please thumbs up if this helped you.
I need help. I have 200+ mods and I can play Minecraft for about 15 minutes then it runs out of memory. How do you increase the permgen size in the vanilla launcher?
