Want to easily export your terrain.png into multiple files to get ready for the new texture pack system? Well it's simple will Photoshop's Slice Tool.
STEP 1: Open your terrain.png in Photoshop. Press C to highlight the the button where you will find the Slice Tool. Once highlight, press and hold the button and select Slice Tool. From one side of the document, to the other, select the entire terrain file in one slice.
STEP 2: Select theSlice Select Toolfrom the same menu you grabbed the Slice Tool (see Step 1). In the top menu, which has now changed, click the large "Divide" button. Check "Divide Horizontally Into" checkbox and then click the "pixels per slice" bullet. Divide by the dimensions of your texture pack. Here we are using 64 pixels. Click OK. Now, click the same check box, only now checking the "Divide Vertically Into" and dividing by 64 pixels vertically.
STEP 3: Well you are done slicing your tile set. Now select File -> Save for web... make sure you save for PNG. Save Images Only.
You're all done! I hope this helps the headache of having to select each block one by one and cutting them!
I don't normally trust little tools, mainly because I loose them on my computer and they only take up space.
Dinnerbone is one of the great Mojang employees. Such small command-line tools does not take up a considerable amount, probably not even passing 1 kB in size.
All I can say about the last point is: clean up, make everything follows a structure!

This is for a graphic developer. Not a kid. If you don't know how to use Photoshop to rename files, then, I don't know what to say. Why use the program? Photoshop comes with Action Scripts you can do just about anything with.
Downloading tools is mundane and sad if you can't learn to do things by yourself with tools that already do it.
There is nothing great about Java developers. It's one of the oldest languages, and one of the most demanding and unstructured. "Great Mojang Employees" Mojang is known for buggy games that don't par to any standards in development. The game came complete with major memory leaks well into 1.8. That whole comment was sad. The real point at hand is, why download something you're going to use a couple times when you can do it without searching/downloading anything.
You also don't need to be trolling threads if you yourself have your problem under control. This is for people that do things by hand.
When compared to other big games such as World of Warcraft (which I have not played) Minecraft is updated more frequently and by a few developers, whereas WOW is updated every... Year? Every other year? I don't know, but I do know they are not as frequent!
Because Minecraft has not yet reached 1.8 I believe you are on about Minecraft Beta 1.8 which is, as the name suggests, a beta version. Bugs are to be expected, even in the final Minecraft product we see today because development is still ongoing, which is great.

... Not reached 1.8? We're talking about 1.8 beta, my friend, It's long passed 1.8. Lmao.
And Minecraft is updated frequently because it's full of scripting errors, Major Developers don't release their games until these bugs are dealt with satisfactory. Also, I play WOW, GW, GW2, and Age of Wushu, and they patch monthly to fix security flaws. Minecraft fixes things that ought have been fixed in the first beta stages. Like just now realizing a tile-set isn't going to give them flexibility with the game and new tiles (even though they have long since announced planning on adding over 100 more blocks before the game was officially at Final 1.0.0.. which never happened.
