We shouldn't anymore. Forge has improved a lot of their hooks so it shouldn't be a big deal anymore. Either way, all you actually need is Forge, since it has FML.

Learn some Java before you mod, and skip over the chapter on ModLoader, straight to MinecraftForge. It's better. Trust me.
Upon reading that again, I feel that it needs clarification.
Minecraft Forge is an alternative to ModLoader, which typically allows much more flexible and compatible mods to be written and used. It also includes a component known as Forge ModLoader, or FML for short. Forge and FML essentially render ModLoader obsolete, and any ModLoader-based mod should be compatible with Forge, since FML is a backwards-compatible bridge between the two.

@drinfernoo
I see that, and in fact, I'm already using Forge without Modloader. The problem I have now is that there doesn't seem to have a way to open a GuiScreen in Forge unless using Modloader, which I am trying to avoid

I'm not sure what the method is, but I would guess you can do it with some method in either MinecraftForgeClient or ForgeModLoader. If there simply isn't a hook for it, try posting on the MinecraftForge forums and see if they will add one.
