Alright, I've used mods for some time, and found them all to be enjoyable. The funny thing is, every thread has said that you need 7-Zip or WinRAR to install a mod, but it's actually pretty easy to install mods without one of these programs.
1) Download the mod, and extract the contents.
2) Go inside of the file and use ctrl + a, then ctrl + c to copy the contents.
3) Run %appdata% using the start menu to find your .minecraft file.
4) Go into the .minecraft file, then the bin file, and find minecraft.jar.
5) Before continuing, make sure that you have show file extensions enabled. Simply click on the organize tab near the top of the window, and head over to Folder and Search Options. Now click on the view tab, and scroll down a bit until you find 'Hide extensions for known file types', which should be enabled. Simply click on it to disable it, and file extensions will be shown.
6) Now, rename minecraft.jar as minecraft.zip. Enter the minecraft.zip file.
7) Now hit ctrl + z to copy the files in. It will take awhile to copy them in.
8) After it is finished, delete the META-INF file. Then exit, and rename minecraft.zip as minecraft.jar
