Hopefully this blog will help you fellow minecraftians out there in the process of setting up a bukkit server! If you already know how to make a server but are looking for a way to install some plugins; go here
Preliminary notes Note: The name of the craftbukkit .jar file must match the one you download. (currently craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar) Note: Unless you have a multi-homed machine and know what this means/requires, server-ip= in server.properties MUST remain unchanged from default and be blank. Note: When running step 5 for the first time, errors will show up. Do not worry as this is normal; the server is generating files and folders needed to run.
Windows
1. Download CraftBukkit's latest recommended build
2. Put the .jar in the desired directory
3. Open notepad and type: Note: If you are running java in 32bit mode on a 64bit machine, change %ProgramFiles% to %ProgramFiles(x86)%
@ECHO OFF
SET BINDIR=%~dp0
CD /D "%BINDIR%"
"%ProgramFiles%\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -Xincgc -Xmx1G -jar craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar
PAUSE
4. Save the document as RUN.bat (not as a .txt)
5. Double Click RUN.bat and you're away!
6. When you're done on your server, issue "stop" command in console (this is very important)
Linux
1. Download CraftBukkit's latest recommended build
2. Put the .jar in a folder, for this example we'll use a generic one: ~/minecraft
3. Move to the above directory with 'cd ~/minecraft'
4. Paste this into the shell:
5. Then type '~/minecraft/minecraft.sh' to run.
6. When you're done on your server, issue "stop" command in console (this is very important)
If you plan to run the server more permanently a init script like this one is recommended
If you are a CentOS user, go here for a more detailed tutorial
Mac OS X
Open Terminal (Found in Application/Utilities) and paste:
cd ~/Desktop
mkdir "Bukkit Server"
cd ~/Desktop/Bukkit\ Server
curl -O http://ci.bukkit.org/job/dev-CraftBukkit/promotion/latest/Recommended/artifact/target/craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar
mv craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar CraftBukkit.jar
echo "cd ~/Desktop/Bukkit\ Server
java -Xincgc -Xmx[RAM]M -jar CraftBukkit.jar" >LaunchServer.command
chmod +x LaunchServer.command
echo "Open LaunchServer.command with TextEdit, and replace [RAM] with:
512 or 1024 or 1536 or 2560 or 3072 or 5120
That is the ram amount the server will have.
512=512MB; 1024=1GB; 1536=1.5GB; 2560=2.5GB; 3072=3GB; 5120=5GB
It is good to update your server at least once per week." >README.txt
open -a TextEdit LaunchServer.command
Textedit should open a document called "LaunchServer.command". Find [RAM] and replace it with:
512 or 1024 or 1536 or 2560 or 3072 or 5120
That is the ram amount the server will have.
512=512MB; 1024=1GB; 1536=1.5GB; 2560=2.5GB; 3072=3GB; 5120=5GB
The server is installed on your Desktop, in "Bukkit Server". To start it double click "LaunchServer.command".
