When editing the contents of minecraft (the appdata) please make a backup!

How to locate and open your minecraft.jar file:
1. Navigate to your Application Data Folder
2. On Windows XP and Vista: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Roaming
3. On Windows 7 C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming
4. Open the .minecraft folder
5. Open the bin folder
6. Right click on the minecraft.jar file
7. Select open with
8. Open the file with your archiving program
How to find terrain.png
-This archive is listed in alphabetical order, all you have to do is locate the file called terrain.png- How to edit/create a texture pack
-If you want to edit this file you first need to drag it out of the archive to any location you see fit. To properly edit the terrain.png file you need a program that supports transparency (DONT USE PAINT), i suggest you use gimp How to save a texture pack
-Once you have done editing the file, save it (makesure you save it as a .png), create a compressed .zip folder, name the .zip folder to anything that distinguishes the texture pack (if that's what your making), and drag the terrain.png file into this .zip folder (make sure it is called terrain/png exactly or else it won't work)- How to apply/use your (or anyone elses) texture pack
-Now you have a custom texture file in the .zip folder all you need to do is put it in the minecraft texture pack folder; to do this either navigate to your .minecraft directory again (top of page) or open minecraft, click mods and texture packs and click open texture pack folder.
