Over the last few months I have enjoyed modding my Minecraft to allow me to have a diverse and wildly
enjoyable adventure outside of the basic "vanilla" game.
Whilst doing this I have been active in the forums, watching how everyone else is doing, what works and what doesn’t, gaining some good info and tips on the mods and also seeing how others are struggling to work out how to install the mods, so I decided to make some instructional videos starting from the Basics and going through to the finished Mod.
I am not a computer genius, nor am I the sharpest knife in the drawer but I do understand a certain amount about the Minecraft game and installing mods. So I hope these videos help even a few people, as I feel for them when I see them trying their best to install things and have fun, only to get frustrated and despair at their lack of ability to mod the game. This then leads to the poor modders fielding questions that are very basic and repetitive which wastes the time they could be spending on their fabulous creations, hence my videos :smile.gif:
My videos will only be for Windows users I’m afraid, as I know nothing about Macs.
Fortunately Driscoll has kindly made a video around Macs, how modding works with them and a general all round look at getting Mac working with Mods, BIG thanks toDriscoll !! Please see the 4th video down...
OK, down to business…
Please start with “The Basics" video as it will help you to understand a bit more about the .minecraft
folder and minecraft.jar file as well as downloading all required pieces and de-compression software.
The “Modding 101” video is the first video where we look at some of the downloaded files and how to install them into your jar file. It shows how easy it can be if you just use the readme`s and instructions given to you by the modders themselves, as well as a bit of common sense.
The "Tips" video is just a bunch of my ideas that help me keep my saves and bins safe as well as how to go back through updates to play things that are no longer around or updated. Plus a look at how I keep my archived builds. This is just a "try it out, or use your own ideas" video, it isn’t for everyone but it might help some folks.
Lastly, the many specific mod videos. These will go through each of the mods one by one, explaining how to install them, configure them (where needed) and get them working. There is 1 video per Mod, and not a generic video, as they are all very different when installing. Again I hope they are helpful to some people...
As I add more mod install videos, please let me know if there is a specific mod you want me to do and I will do my best to oblige. These wont be immediate as I work, but I will do them as quickly as possible for you.
NOW... I have to apologise for the quality of the video files as I don’t have any fancy programs, and the “in-game” pieces are of a lower quality, so sorry about that.
ONE LAST THING: I have made these videos to help others, in my own time, in my own way. I’ve done my best with the small knowledge I have, because I want others to enjoy the VAST array of brilliant talented modders work that is available for our beloved Minecraft. So please don’t post any unkind messages.
This video will take you through:
Finding your .minecraft folder
Finding and opening your minecraft.jar
Finding and Downloading Mods and Support files
Compression software and Checking it worked
This video will take you through:
Opening your downloaded Mod & Support files
Opening your minecraft.jar and drag n dropping files in
Checking the Mod loaded and runs properly
This video will take you through:
Keeping files archived properly
Swapping Mods and Saves in and out quickly
General "organisation" for safekeeping of your data
I will be making one instructional video for each mod. I have a list that I will try to get through as
soon as possible, but if you have a specific one you want me to do, please let me know :smile.gif:
Dont forget to check the "WHATS NEXT" at the bottom of the OP to see which Mod im doing next, so
you dont post a request for something im already doing... TG
On the behalf of the Modding community i want to thank you TG for this very informational thread... and it's only just getting started! ;D
Thanks Mr.O, its the least I can do to help ease the thread of questions that they can now
come here and see it as its done, and not get frustrated waiting for a reply.
You're most welcome to put this video or a link on your thread.
Many thanks for your feedback sir and keep on modding dude !!!!
Cheers,

I do most of this already, because I'm not new to modding games. I used to mess around with Doom.wad files back in the day. So yea... But I was wondering if it was necessary to back up the entire bin folder? I've been just achieving older versions of the minecraft.jar file. I may just start doing that now? but I can't to see the point exactly? Could you explain this part to me? Or is that just an extra precaution on your part? In that case I still think I'll start doing this anyway :biggrin.gif:
Would you mind doing SDK's Guns mod and TooManyItems? I am a total idiot when it comes to this, even though it's super simple, I get a black screen and a crash when I log into Minecraft. (And YES I have deleted my META-INF.) I just need uber specific instructions. Please and thank you.

Reason I back up the whole bin is :
1) Why not, its not that big and I dont leave anything to chance (bad memory)
2) When an update comes its not just the minecraft.jar thats redownloaded its all of them
3) It saves forgetting to put a file back, wrong jar etc, my comfort blanket so to speak :smile.gif:
Yeah so in short your right, its my extra precaution and when showing the less "computer
literate" people I like to give an easy, quick and no fuss lesson. Drag, drop & renaming a
whole folder is a nice easy thing, grabbing one bit could mean them blowing it up and then
come looking for me haha !
Hope you enjoyed the vids and thanks for posting Drascoll.

Hi SabertoothPanda,
Im sorry but I think theres a problem with the SDK install and ModLoader v5. There are lots
of posts in his thread from people who have the same error im getting so I wont be making
a video on this until after the next update. Seems you arent the total idiot you thought you
were :smile.gif: I will keep my eye out for this one.

So, this is not new knowledge but its new to me because I just figured it out, regarding .props files and getting some of the more block intensive mods to run with other block intensive mods. Such as Super Slopes and Mo' Trees
This is something I posed in another thread to help someone out:
Quote from Circa »
I'll try again and I'll look for that modloader.txt
the modloader.txt is located in
for mac:
/Users/~Library/Application Support/minecraft
and
Windows 7 (and possibly Vista)
Open start menu
Type %appdata% in the search bar at the bottom of the menu and hut enter
Open the file titled .minecraft
but you should know this if your trying to mod the game.
When you find your Modloader.text at the bottom of the file you will see something like this
I highlighted the important part in red :biggrin.gif: I forced a conflict by changing some numbers in my .props file to make this example for you:
at net.minecraft.client.Minecraft.run(SourceFile:638)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:680)
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Slot 217 is already occupied by BlockCocoa@1bab2c3 when adding BlockLeavesGeneric@2e242b
at ra.<init>(SourceFile:226)
now in this example is says Slot 217 is already occupied by BlockCoca which is from the Chocolate Mod. The block trying to be added BlockLeavesGeneric is from Nandonalt's Mo' Trees mod.
So to fix the conflict I open the MoreTrees.props or the ChocolateMod.props file in my minecraft folder and change 217 to another number that is not already used by another block between 1-255. This may take some trouble shooting because there are other blocks being used. But generally when a install fails the Modloader.txt will have a line that says Caused by: and a description of where to find the conflict. You may be able to answer your own question with this knowledge.
That's why Moders ask you post the error log.
I hope this helped.
And the second half of this video I posted I try to explain what I'm talking about:
I looked thought your thread and watch your videos and don't see anything regarding this. I found that being able to check the Modloader.txt (being that modloader is required for most good mods these days) can make a world of difference in getting rid of conflicts when installing mods and also a way to address where the problem may lie.
I'm thinking about making a more in depth video covering this but I do like your stile and you certainly have a better voice (implying you may want to make the video *smugface*). So I thought I'd post this just in case it helps anyone. It's not all that complicated and makes a world of difference when installing multiple mods.
Many thanks for the info and I appreciate you doing the video. Its good to get some help as
I dont get a lot of free time with the job I have at the moment so please feel free to make
anything you can.
Its a good bit of info in the vid too, something as you quite rightly said, that I havent
covered yet.
I am going to go through all my 1.3_01 vids today and update where needed...

Hi.
I tried to install the Planes 1.4 SSP mod. It didn't work. Your videos did give me an idea of what to try and fix, though. So, if it isn't too much trouble, can you please do an install video for Planes Beta 1.4? Thank you oh so very much.
