Just for everyone's information, I'm working to get Reckreations involved in our upcoming trailer video. You might know him as the animator behind the Yogscast and Lord of the Craft. There's no guarantee he'll agree to help us, but I'm trying. Stay tuned!
Also, we're likely to need lots of skins, so please post in the Skins thread on the website if you want to be in the video. Even if this doesn't pull through, we'll use them when we do get an animator. Maybe we'll just act one out, so post your skin their if you're interested (not here)!
Not sure about the content of the video yet. It'll probably be some sort of epic battle or siege. If anyone has any ideas for showy and inventive things to include, like a strategy or a trap that no one's seen before (even if it wouldn't really work ingame. Come on, this is show biz!), I'll make a new thread for that on the site, too.
A sense of vastness would do well on the trailer. You could have a few scenes.
Perhaps a video of a group of people trying to invade a large castle. You could have a line of people all firing TNT cannons at the building while at the castle, there is a large amount of people firing arrows from the castle windows, and a few people firing cannons from the top. This would give a sense of "battlefield" and a sense of scale. You could switch between first person person views, third person views on squads, and a view of the whole battlefield. During the first person points, I think it would be cool to have some dialogue, but it a more objective sense as to role playing; communication that people would actually be using in attempt to win the game.
After a show of the open, turbulent battlefield, the camera could do a "meanwhile" switch to a small raiding party. Dialogue would give a brief description of their plans. These people would be sneaking in from underground. While the defenders are absorbed in fending off the invasion, these people would wire up a large amount of tnt to the castle foundation, leave the castle while wiring redstone with them, and detonate the tnt with a lever.
The camera would then switch to a view of the battlefield, showing the whole first floor of the castle disappear into ashes.
That's just an example, but the key thing would be to make it stick out. Every single hardcore pvp server shows nothing but people hitting each other with swords and collecting items. This video should show people using the most innovative means of battle with traps, cannons, and such.
I still say no dialogue. It would be cool to just show such a plan as it plays out, and have all communication be through visual signals, i.e. placing and quickly removing a redstone torch or "waving" with a sword, or even nodding. Cannons would be good.
There are some technical issues we should settle for the video. We would need to film it on a very high-performance server, so we don't have any awkward lag. We should also get some sort of plugin to get rid of nametags. The cameraman should be completely god mode, so explosions don't hurt him. The watershader mod would be nice.
I think quick whispered dialogue would be good; like 'okay, wait for the signal' during the raid etc.
And we'd only need 5-6 actors total. They can change skins to change 'parts'.
plus with some hollywood effects lawl I can turn a march of 4 people into a march of way more.Warning: **** that will confuse you ahead, you have been warned Texture pack green screen into wool or something. Take shot of 4 people walking. Layer 5 of the scenes on top of eachother; position people so it looks good and add a top view of a battle field under the green screen. Chroma key the green screens and boom, 20 people marching with only four actors.
And lag wouldn't be a problem with only 6 actors; we could probably run it on someone's hamachi.
I don't like faction servers that have mcMMO or power. If it's not possible to use teh factions plugin without making it dumb (not being able to destroy other bases unless you claim the land) that's fine. But if not, just leave the faction out of it and keep it as just clans. Also, voice chat should be encouraged but not required, but there should be a rule about staying in clan chat unless it's necessary to go into global chat so as to not spam the chat for other players.
Don't worry, that's almost exactly what we plan on doing.
Name tags can be very annoying at some times. Some people can just look for the names to find where people are and gives away positions. But don't remove name tags completely or people will get confused who is who. Its just needs to be faint enough to see like 5 blocks away but not through walls.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure we won't have Block Logging. How hard would Nocheat be on the server?

and @Matt that's not going to work for several reasons. I'm a bit lazy right now so I'll edit the reasons into this post later today.

That is a really cool song! We'll probably need a stealthier one as well, if we have such a scene in the trailer.
@Kevin: We might as well work together on a trailer, instead of separately. I'd love to be an actor.

If we set the video to music, I think we can do better without dialogue than with it.
We had lag with 4 people on your hamachi.
