We're also gonna need architects, we need efficient designs for farms, homes, the like.
P.S. Since we'll also need a council to head the city, my friends IRL will be the Triumvirate council. The rest of you guys will be the assembly. council proposes laws and stuff, and assembly vote on proposals.
Ooo. I could be the designer, yeah-... that'd fit me even more.
Can you tell us if we're accepted?
Hmm, Thats a good idea. I will post a list of new people accepted every so and so.
You sir, deserve an Internetz!

I've been looking for a casual server for a while now and this seems to be that way! I'm excited. Also, I know I only have two posts. I swear I'm not a griefer; just a lurker.
Sorry for my impatience, but-.. when is the server coming up? Because I've got nothing to do now, yeah well.. :tongue.gif:
P.S Are you gonna host it ? aand, is it going to be a dedicated server? :biggrin.gif:
Haha, I was just wondering that myself.
Just finishing making breakfast and gonna need something to do.
Hold your horses guys. I've already drawn up a basic layout of the town. I'll try and scan it and post the picture so you guys can see what the plan is. By the way, Some buildings will be off-limits to some people, so I need a way to make it so only authorized people can go into certain areas. For example, The bank area behind the counter needs to be off- limits. Also, the meeting hall, where only my 3 IRL friends can enter, needs to be blocked off. Oh and by the way, the town might not be large enough for individual houses, so I just drew an apartment building. Don't worry though, If you want, you can build a house outside of the town limits, but you need to make a property request. Rent for owning any home other than the apartments is 1 per every Minecraft week. We'll also have a farm in the southwest corner, with 4 fields. 2 wheat 1 reeds and 1 cacti. We'll need volunteers for that.

If this is going to be a private server with only the people you accept, a simple combination lock should keep your private areas secure.
One problem I see is your currency idea. This would work fine if people all stayed in the town and just built using materials given to them but this all falls apart if you have people mining and exploring. Eventually they will run across ore and will be able to get money that the people who are building would not get.

I agree. I think there should be city limits and you can build your house within those limits and it has to be a certain size.
If I have to live in an apartment, I'm out.
Ok, so the apartment idea didn't sit so well with you guys. I should just expand the City and make a housing district. You can build your own house i guess. I will need some volunteers for these roles. Bonus pay for those who volunteer and KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
Redstone Scientist: This is not for everyone. I know you might be tempted for the extra pay, but please stay in your own skillset.
Sailor: Again, not for everyone. Sure, anyone could build a boat and sail off, but you need certain skills to find your way back and about how far you have gone.
Adventurer: You might need some combat experience.
Spelunker: Looks for caves and cleans it up so it is alot easier to navigate. (Is different from miner.)
Guard: Duh, protects town. Bow experience is nice.

What if you had some more experianced people teach others what to do? (Example; Spelunker teaching kids how the heck to get out of caves) It would be great if that could be possible.

Would you mind updating the OP with the new job roles and who has been accepted? Once we see what is needed, we can fill in the occupations we're qualified for and figure out where we can do the most good.

Let's just return to what this topic was created to discuss shall we?
Since everyone is suggesting roles I'll mention some town building ideas. So with out further ado...
The Newbie's (or clueless person's) Guide to City Building (and basic SMPing)
(For purposes of this guide I'm assuming you know the basic first day strategies)
I've found this is the best order to build in
1. Mine (In search of some diamonds) - This is absolutely essential build a good mine first because it can provide shelter, coal, metal
and lots of cobble stone. Have everyone on the server regardless of role help with this. Once you have a
chest or two full of Cobblestone and many, many torches move on to part two. Make sure everyone has their own bed to help with long nights
2. Walls (that's a nice life you have there....) - The second most important thing. Have the stupidest er uh "bravest" person go out in search of sand and cactus. The rest of the people should be building the wall. Remember this is your first and best line of defense, make it strong. Suggested dimensions 7-8 blocks tall, 3 blocks thick, make sure to dig a a one block deep trench one block out from the base of your wall and don't forget to add a one block out cropping 5 blocks up to stop spiders.
It should look like this: (Will possibly replace with real pictures at a later date)

After the person with the cactus and sand returns fill the moat with sand so that you can plant cactus on top of it, this should keep mobs away from the walls. Note: there probably won't be enough cactus to completely surround the wall but cactus grows so make sure to harvest it. While building the wall make sure to have someone continue stone mining.
3. City planning (and why it's a good thing) - Make sure you have a plan in mind when you build houses because nothing is more frustrating then having to make oddly shaped roads. I'd recommend building the city around a central structure (possibly a tower or fortress) which contains the main mine. This shouldn't take too long just make sure people mark off the areas they want before continuing.
4. Houses (Your real home's in your chest) - Now comes the fun part, just have everyone build their houses and shops, I prefer to have the houses closer to the town center then put the shops out towards the edges but that's just me.
5. Utilities - Roads are pretty useful and help to give the city a more realistic feel. Also make sure to keep the entire area inside the walls lit up, you wouldn't want creepers ruining your bakery. This would also be a good time to set up a tree, wheat and reed farm.
6. Griefers (and you) - Yes Griefers, unfortunately with any online game you will find stupid hate-filled individuals who would rather be @$$holes then have fun. Are they annoying? Hell yes, but you'll have to figure out how to deal with them sooner or later The four most effective ways to stop (or at least minimize) griefer damage are as follows:
1. The easiest - A whitelist, make people fill out an application or at least give you a little information about themselves, if they are too lazy to do that then you probably don't need them on your server. The downside is you have to constantly check to see if anyone sent in an application.
2. the smartest - Plugins, bukkit essentials, Lwc and worldguard can almost single handedly keep a server from falling apart, this allows you to get a variety of people but can be a huge problem around update time.
3. The laziest - Don't do anything, Just try to keep from clumping wood houses together
[>>-i>] 7. (So you want to have a) War - Many of the things that work against mobs are much less effective against humans so you must have a completely different strategy in mind if you are attacked. Lava is the enemy of your enemy... so make use of it, A single person with a few buckets of lava and a sword can stop an attack by four or five people. Dispensers and arrows are also incredibly useful. But what if someone digs through your wall? Glad you asked...

I agree with everythine in your post except this section. In order to get full protection, you have to have a 2 block wide moat so you can get full coverage with cactus. From the top it would look like this:
Where = Cactus
If you do it your way you end up with this:
Other than that for you
