Setting up a server can be hard, and it can be really hard if you have never used linux from the command line. So what can you do? You can pay your hosting provider outrageous amounts of money to manage your server, this can cost up to $100 an incident or $60/hour at some hosting providers.
OR
You can have me setup your server with everything needed for a lot less.

Whats Required:
A VPS or Dedicated Server with Ubuntu as the OS.
At least 1GB of server RAM
At least 3GB of diskspace
What info I would need:
Server IP
Root login password (you can change it to a temp password if you choose)
What does it cost?
I will do all this for a one time fee of $30 USD (initial server setup only).
I will provide continued server support for $20/month after that.
How long does it take?
Most server setups take about two hours.
A little extra
Here is an image of memory usage by the minecraft java thread, you can see a drop in memory usage. That's before and after optimization of just the way you start the Minecraft Server.
You're telling me, you can do all of this, and do it right? I highly doubt you can. If someone wants a successful server, this is something that has to be done, your Hamachi and DSL Line setup, on your sisters old computer won't cut it.
Then, if you do get a VPS, your stupid, and have NO idea how to keep a server secure, so you pick a "strong" password, you have your minecraft server running as root, and you get hacked somehow, now all your player data, and maps are gone. That is unless you have remote backups running, which I highly doubt you could setup.
You would install the wrong software, using more resources than required, just like all the other guides out there, tell you to use Apache (httpd), which is extreme overkill. So your wasting server resources there. The database is still probably going to be running as InnoDB, which is more resource wasting. Your MySQL server will be using 300-400mb of ram, because you don't know how to optimize its configuration, Web server is using about 200mb of RAM, next thing you know, half your server is being used and you haven't even got the actual game server running.
Then your going to start the game server with the wrong java arguments, because the default bash file they give you will work just fine... right?
Next thing you know, your getting lag, and you have no idea what the problem is, your fine on ram, and your load average is good, and I'm on a VPS, whats the problem? You don't have server graphs so you don't know.
There, I have explained to you why, your turn.....
Bravo ben, bravo. I was just about to write something myself but I see you picked up most of what I wanted to mention. Now, I don't believe that you mean "No offense." I believe you said this as a pathetic ego boost to yourself and to smite ben here. Why you ask? I first looked at the title of this thread and thought, professional right... I've been managing servers for a few years now and recently as a job. I setup servers as a media distribution method for companies, and just from the description this no short of professional. I haven't seen one other person offer such a setup for a minecraft server in his free time. Don't even mention those guides, they are lacking a linux administrators touch.
I am impressed what ben has to offer here, and support him. Geez, for that cost I'd have him do my work! You also did not voice an opinion, an opinion requires thought. I saw none of that go into your post. As a counter, just use a teen as an example who wants to setup a minecraft server but doesn't have the linux knowledge to do so. Easy case and point, many more where that came from.
Also do not try and respond or flame to this. I do not wish to be dragged down to your level and beaten with stupidity.

Thanks, I really do appreciate it.
It's truly frustrating to see a server setup so half hazardly. The tutorial topic for running Minecraft on a dedicated server on this very forum, has you running the server as root, I cringe when I see things like this.
You're telling me, you can do all of this, and do it right? I highly doubt you can. If someone wants a successful server, this is something that has to be done, your Hamachi and DSL Line setup, on your sisters old computer won't cut it.

Remote-Backups Server -
Plugins -
CP -
My servers been running for 7 days straight with no lag or even a hint of spikes. Also, people do your service that you charge for, for free out of contribution. Obviously you tried to put up an argument that made no sense whatsoever. All your service, can literally be done in 30~40 minutes. Most companies do it for free.
Basically, your argument is this simplified. "If you are too lazy and have lot of money, just let me do it for you."
All your points you've made rarely happen and if they actually do, customer support fixes it...quickly.
This is Minecraft Installation, not rocket science. If a 15 year old kid (like me) can figure it out, I'm sure more can.
Also, I doubt anyone would take their time to hack into a Minecraft Server, It's not valuable or anything. If anything, just ask your hosts to change your password.
If you actually think you are that professional, that you "cringe" when hearing root you need a reality check. This is Minecraft. No need to get so complicated. You're running this on Java for christ sake.
Now, here's my question.
List one hosting provider that charges $100 for a Minecraft Set-up or $60/hour.
My first time before I taught myself, customer support did it for free. So I tipped the guy (out of the kindness of my heart) $5.
First, they are not remote backups, so if your server goes down, your backups go with it, so no real point in having them.
Second, anyone can install plugins, or I hope they can.
Third, that's just a picture of your VPS providers control panel... I'm not sure what that has to do with my topic.
Just a list of points.
I bet your minecraft server is running as root, which is a security risk.
I know your server is running as root, since root owns the files.
Your using SFTP to connect to your server. You don't know how to setup an FTP server.
You game is running from a base directory of "/MINECRAFT/" not in a /home/ or even in /root/.....
If you had a FTP server setup, which you don't I bet that would be insecure also.
Where is your Live and Static map generation.
No true remote backups. Your directorys look fishy, since there both in the same root /MINECRAFT/ folder.... so I say they are not remote backups.
Your java is running unoptimized.
I doubt your server is using MySQL and if it is, its running default configuration.
I don't see a Minecraft Admin Page.
If your MC server goes down, can it send you an email? I doubt it.
I could go on, really I could.
Good job blocking out the IP and hostname, or I would tell you how unsafe your firewall is.
Looks to me like you just followed the tutorial on the front page.
Let me finish writing my tutorial and I will post it up. Then, just maybe, you can have a somewhat decent server.

Here's what I have to say.
This isn't a multi-million dollar server. No one would hack it.
It is run by root, since I don't need much security. No one will attempt to steal it.
Minecraft is about creativity. I save the backups whenever I need but I do server wipes at times.
Java doesn't need to be optimized...it's java, just let it run at a good pace. I don't need to hold 500 people.
If you actually think people would pay $20/month, AllGamer does is the same price and gives you a host with everything.
My server won't go down, and if it did I would just restart it or ask support (That's why they're there.)
Ultimately, this is Minecraft, hence the reason why servers for it costs $8 a month. What you offer are extreme luxuries which no one will ever need. If you can't take criticism, don't run a service.
I would take your talent and use it for a dedicated World of Warcraft Private server or something, not Minecraft.
P.S - You still never gave me a answer.
List one provider that would charge $100 set up fee, or $60 an hour.
So use my knowledge to run an illegal server, sure thing boss.
You have no idea what your talking about, you have no experience running a popular minecraft server, and never will.
People don't hack? Whats the ultimate grief, how about destroying the entire world, and the server with it. People who grief, would destroy your server if they knew how. Just because you don't need to support a large player base, doesn't mean everyone else wont either.
Now then, since you can't seem to believe me, I will first say.
I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THESE COMPANIES
godaddy.com - $199/m with forced control panel and forced three month payment plan
serverpronto.com - minimum $22/m
serverpoint.com - minimum $49/m
codero.com - minimum $60/m - $99/hour without management package and $69/hour with $90/m management package.
hivelocity.net - minimum $30/m
cari.net - minimun $30/m with monitoring and backup
So use my knowledge to run an illegal server, sure thing boss.

I could list plenty more if you really want.
Do you not understand the question? All those you listed actually give you a VPS. In fact, you tried making it sound good by adding godaddy which does Dedicated Servers. That could hold 300 people.
All you are offering is installing and some customer support where these services give you customer support + installation + VPS.
EDIT : Do not run a company if you can't handle criticism, reality : No one will pay for this service. Don't waste your time. I'm done arguing with you. You take all the time you want in this project, I'd love to see someone who runs a large player base server need help with any of this.
EDIT 2 : WoW Pservers aren't illegal as long as their files are within the copyright policy. (Hence the reason why all servers don't run cataclysm.)
I can't believe what a cocky little kid he is. He has no idea what he is talking about. Kid, to put it lightly you are in way over your head. Remote backup? I laughed so hard XD. I'm sorry kid, you lost. The internet does not revolve around you, I would suggest you step back into the reality that is your childhood and enjoy it while it lasts. However, I will entertain you and go quote by quote to point out how so very wrong you are.
Remote-Backups Server
Note the key word here, "Remote". What you have there is a backup directory. Two totally different things.
plugins
This may be the only thing you have right in your entire "argument".
CP
That sir is a VPS control panel, not a Minecraft control panel. My mind bleeds for your ignorance.
My servers been running for 7 days straight with no lag or even a hint of spikes
Only seven days? Really?
Also, people do your service that you charge for, for free out of contribution.
There are few and far in-between. Today it snowed 15 cm. I went out and shoveled my neighbor's driveway because they are an elderly couple. Some kids came around asking for $10 to do the same work. Does this mean I should discourage them from finding work because I volunteered to do the same work? No.
Basically, your argument is this simplified. "If you are too lazy and have lot of money, just let me do it for you."
Okay, let me simplify your "argument" now. "I'm a kid who thinks he's better than everyone else."
Ignorance, yours is bliss.
All your service, can literally be done in 30~40 minutes. Most companies do it for free.
All those packages installing alone on a VPS might add up to that time depending on how much you cheap out, especially if you compile from the source! I know you have no support behind this evidence and are talking out your ass as always, typical of such a kid. There are companies that sell a VPS focused towards Minecraft. Of course they are going to setup it up for you free! However, the level of experience varies and generally cost is a little bit more. Companies that sell a VPS as is couldn't care about you kid. There are way more companies that sell VPSs than just for Minecraft. Meaning a broader market to compare prices.
All your points you've made rarely happen and if they actually do, customer support fixes it...quickly.
Okay, when your everything doesn't work or break we'll see who is laughing :smile.gif:
Again, customer support for a VPS will not help you with server side applications. It's in the TOS.
This is Minecraft Installation, not rocket science. If a 15 year old kid (like me) can figure it out, I'm sure more can.
You mean figure out a bare minimum installation and then gloat about it like you are the best thing since sliced bread? Of course! There is no denying it, you've just proved it. Programs are meant to be simple for the end user. What we are talking about is the fine essence of configuration on a server. There are degrees in this kid. The stuff that goes beyond a manual and does make a difference. I support your, "If I can do it, so can you!" but what you see in the description is beyond your technical know how.
Also, I doubt anyone would take their time to hack into a Minecraft Server
If it can be used as a zombie machine, why not? It's as good as any other VPS and now twice as easy to hack thanks to your point. I bet your running your SSH on port 22 *Facepalm* There are bots who's purpose is just to scan that port and brute force your weak root password and then turn your VPS into either a mail bomber or botnet. Next you have your hosting company claiming you did all that damage and can't prove you didn't. Your service is terminated due to a violation in the TOS. You lose.
It's not valuable or anything. If anything, just ask your hosts to change your password.
Yep, nothing like a password change to fix everything. Despite the damage being done, I'm sure changing a password fixes everything........
If you actually think you are that professional, that you "cringe" when hearing root you need a reality check.
Dear God what have you said. If you listen closely you can hear a thousand programmer's laughs in the distance. http://matir.wordpress.com/2007/08/14/r ... -not-okay/
You sir need a reality check of your own, so I wouldn't be talking. Arguing with professionals? Why don't you go play your halos or something.
List one hosting provider that charges $100 for a Minecraft Set-up or $60/hour.
Like I said before, they couldn't care less about you. I put it in my web design contacts and run a partnership business so there is a case a point. I only charge $50 an hour though. But since you asked I decided to look at my very own professional host:
Carat Networks Inc. provides 24 x 7 technical support to its subscribers. All servers housed at our facility are unmanaged. The Company only ensures that the server is online and is remotely accessible. Carat Networks Inc. does not offer tech support for application specific issues such as, but not limited to, CGI programming, HTML, etc. Carat Networks Inc. does not provide technical support for your customers.
There is a difference between unmanaged and managed. Some hosting providers provide the option for managed, or they will provide the option for this kind of support but at a cost. I would go deeper and read over many more hosting companies but my point is clear. I'll even email them just to prove your ignorance to see how much they would charge per hour if they were to work on a server side application such as Minecraft.
I'm waiting.
Waiting for what? Your sad excuse of an "argument" to be bashed again?! Kid, please look up the definition before thinking you can hold a light to this. I see no counter to my points, I see no valid points you yourself have made.
I'm going to give you a case and point of what can be improved. I actually had this saved for a study on Minecraft. I hope you can connect the dots. Do you know what the Eden Space memory pool is in Java? No? Well, that's cool. It's one of the several memory pools Java deals with, it's also one of the most fluctuating in Minecraft. By tuning the Survivors ratio in Java you can reduce this fluctuation and thus reduce memory spikes and lag. I was able to keep Minecraft under 100MB after a day worth of tuning with no lag. This was client side. Server side was a different story. In the Minecraft multiplayer server side I was able to reduce a populated server to under 200MB of ram without any lag.
This kid, is what ben here can improve on. So your telling me at least a 50% reduction in ram is not worth it? Okay.
Here's another. You get in a fight with one of your friends, next he threatens to DDoS your server. Next he sends his botnet of an staggering 15 computers to ping your Minecraft server! *Sarcasm* your Minecraft server goes down and you have no idea how to stop the attack. Would of helped if you configured your firewall correctly. Hmm?
My previous statement:
Also do not try and respond or flame to this. I do not wish to be dragged down to your level and beaten with stupidity.
All your points you've made rarely happen and if they actually do, customer support fixes it...quickly.
Okay, when your everything doesn't work or break we'll see who is laughing :smile.gif:
Again, customer support for a VPS will not help you with server side applications. It's in the TOS.
That's not entirely true. Most hosts including us do help if it's not some obsolete software and won't take more than 15 minutes or so to resolve.
Also, I doubt anyone would take their time to hack into a Minecraft Server

Most hosts won't terminate services because your server was compromised. They will require an OS reinstall and lecture you on security. If it happens repeatedly, then yes, a termination is likely.

Okay, so I was a little off and I retract that statement. Exhaustion of shoveling snow all day, and pushing out stuck cars will do that to you. I don't know how I forgot about allgamer as an example, very creditable in my opinion. Anyhow, I'm out, falling off topic.
Honestly, I think this is a pretty good service of you to do and $30 for a one time fee is not bad at all. Best of luck to you.
- I have not used this service so I cannot speak on anything about the quality or speed of it.

It's cool to have a service like this. I'd probably buy it if I didn't already have someone.
So if someone pays the $30 you'll setup their server with MySQL and everything? I am most interested in the optimization, my server uses so much memory that I have to use Burst RAM, which is buggy.

I don't feel like quoting that essay/speech so I'll just do it that way.
You're completely off topic. How does my age have to do with anything? I'm sure that insulting me doesn't have anything to do with the points you are making. Half of them are wrong. (I'd love to know your age, I'm ready to laugh.)
My company, is Hazenet. They sell VPS's but don't specialize in Minecraft. They installed minecraft for me.
MyMcServ, specializes in MineCraft with a panel too. Only $8 a month.
Hazenet's support also will always help you with Minecraft. That's how I learned. Instead of asking and asking, I learn.
No, Companies won't just cash out on you and leave your server to rot. People are actually good in this world, not everyone is against you.
Now, from the amount of "kid" you wrote, I'm guessing...you're mad. Haha, I'm the one laughing when you are literally arguing with a "kid." Learn how to argue maturely, do it with points and I'm sure Benphelps doesn't need a bodyguard a.k.a a *****.
Where are there egotistic statements? I'm just saying that this isn't a good business idea or at least lower the pricing. Now, just because you had a horrible day of shoveling, don't take it out on other people. In fact, just relax and have a cup of coffee instead of going online and arguing with a 15 year old. Do you know how pathetic that sounds?

Good luck to your service ben. :smile.gif:
Thanks, I really do appreciate it.
It's truly frustrating to see a server setup so half hazardly. The tutorial topic for running Minecraft on a dedicated server on this very forum, has you running the server as root, I cringe when I see things like this.
I'm waiting.
Or, in fact, a provider that charges over $30.
Note the key word here, "Remote". What you have there is a backup directory. Two totally different things.
This may be the only thing you have right in your entire "argument".
That sir is a VPS control panel, not a Minecraft control panel. My mind bleeds for your ignorance.
Only seven days? Really?
There are few and far in-between. Today it snowed 15 cm. I went out and shoveled my neighbor's driveway because they are an elderly couple. Some kids came around asking for $10 to do the same work. Does this mean I should discourage them from finding work because I volunteered to do the same work? No.
Okay, let me simplify your "argument" now. "I'm a kid who thinks he's better than everyone else."
Ignorance, yours is bliss.
Okay, when your everything doesn't work or break we'll see who is laughing :smile.gif:
Again, customer support for a VPS will not help you with server side applications. It's in the TOS.
You lose.
Yep, nothing like a password change to fix everything. Despite the damage being done, I'm sure changing a password fixes everything........
Like I said before, they couldn't care less about you. I put it in my web design contacts and run a partnership business so there is a case a point. I only charge $50 an hour though. But since you asked I decided to look at my very own professional host:
There is a difference between unmanaged and managed. Some hosting providers provide the option for managed, or they will provide the option for this kind of support but at a cost. I would go deeper and read over many more hosting companies but my point is clear. I'll even email them just to prove your ignorance to see how much they would charge per hour if they were to work on a server side application such as Minecraft.
I guess kids will be kids.
That's not entirely true. Most hosts including us do help if it's not some obsolete software and won't take more than 15 minutes or so to resolve.

- I have not used this service so I cannot speak on anything about the quality or speed of it.

So if someone pays the $30 you'll setup their server with MySQL and everything? I am most interested in the optimization, my server uses so much memory that I have to use Burst RAM, which is buggy.

Need help with your server? Feel free to PM me!
P.S - Learn how to debate without insulting someone.
EDIT: My friends actually don't take their time DDoS'ing Minecraft Servers when we get in fights.
Mod edit: Perhaps you didn't see what I had said earlier, but I had asked everyone to stop bickering and get back on topic. A warning has been issued for this post.
You are willing to pay $30 + $20/month support?
That's almost the pricing of a 3GB~4GB Server.
But that's not for me to decide, feel free to purchase.
