According to whom? I've checked the releases and Mojang never said anything of the sort, and there's no reason to believe that they'd implement a system they had no intention of using unless they came right out and said so. And considering the fanfare, its unlikely that it'll be dummied out.

I've read things from them (Grum or Mog..... possibly Dinnerbone) basically saying "Adding custom models is a big step for the API" and that "No models will be changed in vanilla, but resource packs can".
Also, Mog did make models, but they're in a pack, not vanilla, and in response to:

The fact that you're a Mojang employee kinda suggests this is going to be used in vanilla Minecraft. Is this true?

No, I did this on my own specifically because there are no near-term plans to introduce these sorts of blocks into the game.
Sorry I can't find more of a better statement for you, I know I've seen it, but I also read Jeb's/Dinnerbone's/Grum's/TheMogMiner's twitter and reddit, so it's hard to say from which of the 8 or so accounts it was I read something on weeks ago. It might have been twitter because I remember someone saying something along the lines of "Ugh, minecraft is ruined because of models!!!!111!!!1!!1" and them responding with the "we aren't adding new models into vanilla".
EDIT: Also, read something like this. Specifically "you won't visibly see differences", because it's a re-write mainly for API stuff. It's entirely logical that they'd add a feature in that they "don't use".

being forced to choose to stay outside.

Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Hmm... okay. Then I suppose I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. For now.
I personally love this update. I enjoy the new villager AI, mob AI, the new blocks, and just 1.8 in general. This means they will possibly expand upon the end some more.
I'm not trying to say endermites complain that endermites are useless, but what purpose would they serve in Minecraft? Are they an aesthetic feature? Or are they planned for something bigger?
What has this game become... I remember the good old days in minecraft, where it was simple and original, and it felt like a magical land of blocks where you could create anything you wanted and anything could happen... Now this... Is Mojang adding things just to add things? I mean really, what purpose does the endermite serve? In 1.8 minecarts will go so fast that they won't be able to go around a turn without flying off the tracks. Why change these things if they don't need changing? And don't even get me started on those new 3d models... They look utterly disgusting and don't look like they belong in minecraft.
P.S: please don't criticize me for expressing my opinion.
Apparently the slowdown when going up an incline on a normal rail has been significantly increased. Thank you 14w11b snapshot for completely breaking My rail system.
I am so happy that now the minecarts are faster than creative because it means that i have a use for them now because i love the railway aspect of minecraft.
