David and Toby give us a rundown on this week's Minecrafty goodness, including the elusive "Minecraft Realms" feature, currently in testing!
So wait, what is Minecraft Realms? It appears to be an in-development alternative to server hosting, where users will be able to start a server up at the push of an in-game button, and invite their friends to play, all from within the game. I have had a chance to test this out myself, and so far, it has been very easy to understand and use! A very promising feature indeed.
Youtuber BebopVox has also compiled a list of currently known features about Minecraft Realms:
Mojang hosted servers through a company like Amazon or Multiplay
Currently free for 100 people during Beta
Passes were given out randomly to help test
Looking to charge in the future, unknown price for how much time
DanFrisk from Mojang leading the project
Currently no permissions for op/mod etc... as a host.
Overall keeping it simple to play with friends, 1 click play.
If invited, you cannot make a server, only those 100 people can
currently, only 100 players were invited to test this feature, and they can invite whoever they like to their Realm servers. However, even if invited, those players do not gain the ability to make a Realm server of their own. Not just yet, that is
Currently only 1 server can be made at a time if hosting
I think i'm going to stay away from realm since it's only 4 players.
No worries! I don't think many of us will see that for a long time. Everyone I have see with it is either a huge youtuber or has allot of money and went to minecon.
You have got to be kidding me! I've been working on a mod that I had dubbed as "The Realms", and now I have to come up with an entirely new name for it...

MINECRAFT REALM =/= "The realms"
...Also these current features are that of the beta test. These current features are not indicators of what the final product of realms will be.
Seriously, charging for server hosting? So Minecraft Realms was the "in-game persistent server" feature? I am definitely NOT gonna use it. Sorry Mojang, close but no cigar.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
In theory, this would be a way for a small group of friends to have their own private server, without dealing with griefers, lag, and the such... again, this is just in theory, we shall see how it turns out in the future
Has anyone noticed that in snapshot 13w09a and above where it says 'Smooth Lighting: Off' the 'ff' are supposed to be capitals, not lower-case letters! lol

Yep, sure seems nice and random to me. Look at all of those capes wavin' around on the realms...
Also, does anyone remember that old, first gen MMORPG, "The Realm?" An old clunker like that might jump at the chance to scab some money off the name at some point.
I always wanted something like this after they made LAN servers. I hope its not too much money. 3 - 8 bucks for 2 months would be good, but I almost know that its gonna be more expensive. I hope that the player limit is expanded during public beta/after beta. Maybe 10 - 15 players. Even if the player limit isn't expanded, i'm gonna get it if it's cheap.

Sigh... You know, technically, we can get Mojang into big trouble with this if it costs money. When I bought the game, it said that this would be my only payment, and that they would not charge me for any new content. This is new content. I would normally just ignore this infringement (pardon the big word, folks), but since it's Jeb instead of the creator of the game, I want to take action. Jeb's already ed up the game enough (nerfing bonemeal, ect.) and this is just obnoxious. Whats Jeb's email?

You can read more details about Realms in his Reddit thread, and of course, on the official Wiki!

It's unfair to give it to just XBox.

This may be, but if they call it Realms at all, then I will want to change what I am calling my mod so as to not confuse people.
