I like the update as much as the next guy, but for the first time in my life I'm displeased with how small this update was, i was hoping for actually terrain change, but we got only biomes and slightly more variation, which is really saddening, Most terrain posts, which wanted a better terrain gen, pretty much gave up due to the majority wanting to break the game with a rediculously long list of content that always lag the game to high proportions every update.
Honestly I do still like minecraft but only by a small margin at this point, I see no point to playing Vanilla Single Player, mainly because of lack of performance and the fact that minecraft gets boring pretty fast, also Mojang themselves seem to have completely forgotten of the promises they gave us, of what they will add to minecraft, If theres anyone to blame about the fall minecraft (Which seem to be happening sooner, give it another year) it have to be pretty much everyone
Ofcourse I'm getting off-topic, either way 1.7 is good, but it's a matter of time when all the new biomes are discovered and once again like in the adventure update, people will begin to complain AGAIN. Well thats all i have to say.
(Ahem) I've been waiting for powered minecarts to stop being useless for a while. Linking would be a godsend.
why the hell is everyone talking and complaining about 1.7.1 ?? that does not make any sense ...
they just released 1.7pre1, there isn't even a 1.7.0 (maybe friday there is, but still no 1.7.1)
yep, like 99% of the updates b4 too
Check the MC launcher thing or Mojang's website. They released 1.7.1 because 1.7.0 refused to load on linux.
First off, I love seeing people complain about oceans being harder to find. Honestly, I hate coming across an ocean. Half the worlds I generate spawn me on an island. Even when It doesn't I hate exploring to find a village or something, coming across the ocean and having to turn around and go in a different direction. I'm glad oceans are harder to find(even though it still likes to spawn me on islands.)
Second, this is a good update from 1.6.4. New biomes, flowers, wood, saplings, fishing changes, new way to handle texture packs. It's nice and all..BUT...there's still things I wish they'd do.
I honestly wish they'd stop constantly adding new features, and go back to old features that need updating. Minecarts need more use. Redstone could really use an update(Dyable redstone, so you can put different colors next to each other and overlapping without effecting other colors? More redstone activated blocks?). Upgradable things like furnaces, and chests, for faster cooking, and better storage. New tools that are better than diamond, to give miners something to shoot for after diamond. New kinds of Bows/arrows. Even villages could really use some fixing so they don't spawn as screwed up as they usually do. Also, we REALLY need some kind of backpack item to expand our inventory, especially seeing how they insist on adding tons of new items and blocks constantly.
Even core stuff still needs to be worked on/fixed. Like the Mod API, and overall framerate. They add more and more stuff, which causes more and more lag. And the Mod API would probably go a lot faster if more people were helping with it rather than working on every other minor item and block they try to add.
I mean, I appreciate that Mojang are still putting out frequent updates, but I just wish they'd focus on more important/useful things, rather than 'pretty flowers' and biomes that aren't even that big of a change. Stuff already exists that could use working on, instead of adding more stuff that feels half-finished.
Okay how exactly do you get this update? sorry i haven't played in a while D: i really want to try it though
To get the Pre-release:
Go in the Launcher, and click New Profile, and name it "Snapshots" or anything you want. Don't save it yet. Create a folder on your Desktop called "snapshots". In the New Profile window, check the box next to "Game Directory", and put this location:
C:\Users\(YOUR USERNAME)\Desktop\snapshots
This is so the snapshot files won't interfere with your regular files. Now in the New Profile window, check the box next to "Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots")". Then in the Use Version dropdown, select "snapshot 1.7.1". Now click Save Profile. Then click Play. It will take a few seconds to load.
To get the full version:
The full version will be released on Friday, October 25, 2013. Once it is released (see https://mojang.com/ to see if it's released), go in the Launcher and select your default Profile, and click Edit Profile. Now under the Use Version dropdown, select either "release 1.7.1" or "Use Latest Version". Now click Save Profile. Then click Play. It will take a few seconds to load.
I agree with TXF, while I think the new stuff is great, I'd rather see updates to things we already have. The most exciting thing about this update I think is fishing--making what was already in Minecraft even better. I'd rather see the villages, villagers, and trades updated, see more diverse structures and caves to explore than whole new biomes and blocks personally.

I totally agree! While I think that fishing really needed this overhaul, and I am glad about having spruce forests and flower power, I humbly request that some more revamping be done on some of the firmly established content. That could be the next update.
What is really needed now, in my opinion, is some way to save the ever-dwindling populations of villagers in Minecraft! Zombies are so horrible now that they're completely wiping them out in all my worlds. Its pitiful, lol.
You can, yes, but that's such a pain in the ass. On VoxelMap/Zan's Minimap, you set your waypoint, like you do in REI's or whatever, and then you can pull up a menu that shows all of your waypoints, click on one, and go there. It's a great tool, and I love it, but I can totally understand the frustration with not wanting to update it. I've tried my hand at modding, and the hoops you have to jump through every time Minecraft updates was enough to put me off ever finishing mine at all.
cheers, glad you like that feature It's just a convenience really, but I enjoy it.
Anyway, I'm not going to give up without looking at it. It's just super frustrating. 1.4.7 and before I could use the same codebase with minimal changes across versions. With 1.5, one of the major classes in the map was totally different between 1.4.7 and 1.5, which made backporting features a pain. With 1.6 nearly every class is different and there is basically no way to backport stuff (which sucks for people still using 1.5 or 1.4.7 even heh). I shudder to think what 1.7 will be like. Should have a better idea in a week or so! And at any rate if I bail, I'll hand it off to a fourth maintainer
Agree with some of the other posters: like the new variety of biomes, the new log top textures are hideous (will be one of the first things I change), I'm so-so on the new flowers since it doesn't really change the game play either way.
While I appreciate the work going into these changes it would be REALLY great if the issues with villagers would be solved.
Obviously the issue with villagers crowding into just one or two houses is highly annoying. Also the villagers now seem to be leaving their houses slightly earlier which makes them more susceptible to being eaten by zombies (in many cases this is caused by the default doors on some houses being inset rather than flush, and, sometimes compounded by the overhang of some of the roofs). Usually when coming across a new village first thing I do is lop off the stairs over a door and chop down the door/replace it.
The new villager behavior can be annoying - the baby steps, the sudden running in panic as all try to converge on their chosen door, the running around in circles until you bump them to startle them out of the stupid pathing, etc. It would be really cool if the AI of the villagers recognized you were pointing at a certain block and would move so you don't hit them accidentally (thus triggering immediate golem rampage). Also when they start moving in these circular patterns suddenly they lose the "entity" property and you can't bump them (it's like they become transparent and you can walk into them). The fact that you can have several villagers right next to a house you just made (even if it has 20 doors) and they just ignore those doors is rather stupid.
Before any new features show up in future updates I really wish these issues would be addressed since they do greatly affect survival game play.
Check the MC launcher thing or Mojang's website. They released 1.7.1 because 1.7.0 refused to load on linux.
I would refuse to start for *some* users using Linux. 1.7 pre worked just fine for me (with Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, nvidia driver v319 updates), but I've also never had trouble with Minecraft ever on my system. I think it was a driver (intel/mesa or AMD?) issue/incompatibility.

Dude you don't know what you are talking about, the 1.7 update is going to be the best update that we've had in a long time. I haven't seen the network coding yet, and I will, trust me, because I'm a modder, but i'm sure it's not as bad as you were saying. Everything they've done so far is a step for something greater. Once again the preview is obviously not the final product, so not everything is quite complete yet. There is no reason you should be judging this until it is completely finished.
I know what Im talking, Ri5ux. Well I have server IPs that are online and it says "Can't reach server" (eg my CrapCraft server IP uses SRV and its online.) 1.7.1 snapshot isn't even "done", have you looked for the setting "Super Secret Setting" that should be renamed to "Shaders".
I have like 30 servers in my list and I never name them so idk what kind of server is (The IP isn't visible, its not hidden though) and sometimes the pinging thing is ever slower than ever.
Also I have found a bug x) Play a sound then press quickly ESC 20 times in a row. you'll notice the sound plays again even if its finished (eg a creeper SSSSS and boom) ... SSSS booom.. Boommm.. like that.
They can fix out issues so quickly? I bet 1.7.2 or... LOL 1.7.3 (Remember the beta days?) or 1.7.4. Who knows?
I feel namechanging very badly, and plugin API too (I hope it wont ban users using mods eg: Reis, inventory tweaks...)
oh well we'll see it when it comes out

Egads. This is exactly why I never went anywhere with my mod, though. Or rather, I'd nearly got finished with it, and then Minecraft updated, and I just couldn't be bothered to do everything all over again. Hopefully the Plugin API will make that particular headache go away, because there are a lot of great mods that just stop being updated. Timber! was another one I already miss dearly, but which probably stopped being updated for the same reason.

Alright, I completely understand why you feel this way, as I've never really seen Mojang release a snapshot with so many bugs, but most of these bugs seem like they would only take a few minutes to fix. As for the server list and seeing the IPs, I'm sure they'll bring that back because honestly, I never see people change the server name. And yeah, the super secret settings GUI is obviously not finished, but it doesn't take long to make a GUI either. It seems as if Mojang is just getting a bit lazy on us at the end of the update.
Also, name changing wont be an issue. I imagine that the main username will always remain the same, by name changing they just mean that they will be creating a new in-game display name that can be changed. When you use a command to ban someone using the nickname it wont cause a conflict because it will be searching for that display name and once it finds that player, it receives the players real username and bans that username. It's a lot easier to do than it is to explain.
I did also notice the other issues you explained, and they also look like easy to fix bugs. If they actually tried to finish it, they could have it done in less than an hour.

It was actually better when they first fixed it. After each snapshot they released, more and more black spots seem to appear.

But this news is outdated! Mojang has released Minecraft 1.7.1! Quick, get on here:
https://mojang.com/2013/10/minecraft-1-7-the-update-that-changed-the-world/
The latest version is Minecraft 1.7.1, if you are wondering. This is not to be confused with the beta version.
Also, name changing wont be an issue.
