Wow. So many things! I love it; after having lots of "technical" work done, with how the engine and the code works, they blast this absolutely insane amount of content at us (look at the MCwiki changelog). Couldn't really have hoped for more, in a "terrain" update.
It is a Mesa biome, but because the main blocks for the biome haven't been implemented yet, only the blocks that have been appear, if that makes any sense.
I can simply not get my Minecraft to download the snapshot. I have snapshots enabled but it keeps launching 1.6.2. I've also tried deleting my Jar, but it didn't do anything to help. Can someone please help?
Did you create a new profile as the instructions said?
i noticed nobodys mentioned the new options menu with sound and control over every sound
also another biome stone beach. and now after a certain world height rain will turn to snow, not positive on this one will someone else go to the top of an extreme hills biome and turn the rain on to see if it transitions to rain and snow after a certain block height? it seems this only works in extreme hills allowing for snow covered mountains
also it seems as if sugar cane has 2 different colors now
I love this so far. I do wonder what the Super Secret Settings does, but it wouldn't be a secret if we knew. The Amplified setting looked awesome when I used it, but sadly Minecraft crashed a little bit after starting it. I guess my computer doesn't have enough beef in it.
Well I have started with the new snapshots, and I must say I am impressed with the new biomes.
Even the old biomes have a lot of new stuff. Swamps are more swampy with lot more smaller water pools.. no more boat shortcuts through swamp areas. But they also can have some low hills and cliff features too, even without any amplification (which is way too over the top, looks great without it)
However ALL previous map seed will be useless... No more 'punchwood island' (Seed: "punchwood.com") for example.
You do still start in a forest, but there all similarities end. Small Ocean to north (all oceans are smaller), plains (with sunflowers) to south. Roofed Forest to West.
BUT really... no island!
If you want to see some swampland go North east from spawn point, across the stony snowcapped mountains. This swamp even has a large lava pool.
Not certain I like that all the ocean floors are not just gravel. Oceans are now VERY boring! Clay mining is also going to be a lot harder, and gravel will tend to fill in any underwater cave entrenches, if you can even see them with the darkness!
UPDATE: It does not rain in savana!
Also if you fly (creative) or piller up high, rain turns to snow!
I feel so sorry for all the people who spent months complaining about terrain generation. With this new update, they'll have nothing to complain about. With nothing to complain about, their lives will lose all meaning! *sad face*
Oh, they'll still have crap to complain about! They will!!! They'll show you...they'll show you ALL! Mwa ha ha haaa!!!
Ahem, anyway...I really like this snapshot! There's so much good to talk about, that I can only bother with the negatives.
I'm disappointed that the new trees (except for the mega spruce) don't have their own wood. However, I'm not worried about this because it is only the first snapshot.
I kind of wish snorkling potions were brewed out of gills or something, but whatever.
The Birch Forest probably should just be a sub biome of the (Deciduous) Forest. The fact that it has a different coloured grass suggests that it is its only biome, which annoys me. Reason being that it seems like such a specific biome. Birch Forest. Only birches. That's the type of ecosystem you find within (Deciduous) Forests anyway.
Extreme Hills, just for the sake of people shutting up about them and realism, should be renamed to Alpines.
The world is still too...well, short. There's 255 layers, but only 128 are really used. I reckon in the future, the sea level should be raised to layer 96 (allowing for more layers for mining, much larger caverns and deeper oceans). Clouds should then be raised to layer 224 (I personally think the clouds would be more out of the way if they were much higher up). Then, mountains should be raised to be much higher (But only Alpines should go higher than the clouds). Then (Aren't I a demanding person?), the layers at which snow falls should be raised, because seeing snow not-that-much-higher than the rest of the world is off-putting.
I'd love to see rivers generate across multiple layers, instead of each river always be at the same layer.
I'd also love to see the Chaparral biome added. You know, the kind of biome you find around the west coast of the Americas (and Western Australia, coast of the Mediterranean and parts of South Africa). It has large rolling hills, dull green grass and lots of shrubs.
The particles upon landing are strangely coded. Instead of appearing exactly where the player landed, they form on the middle of the block that the player landed on, leading to the particles appearing out-of-place most of the time.
Right, that's enough rambling for today. Overall, amazing performance by Mojang. You guys are awesome!!!
Checked the official changelog on the wiki, and it doesn't look like they're going to be adding anything particularly noteworthy. But I suppose no news is good news (which, when you think about it, is a somewhat paradoxical statement).
I am going to have to come up with textures for a few new things, but that's not a problem.
Oh, why why why dose my computer have to be so old?!?! I'm still stuck on 1.5.2
Have you tried this snapshot? I've a 4+ years old quadcore cpu (Intel Q9550) and got a massive boost in fps.
Before it was around 45-90-ish. Now it's more common to be in the 150+ area.
No, they were called flowers. As for the forests, there are both Spruce and Birch forests.
What seed!!

that's all i could find for now

Keep scrolling. Just keep scrolling...
Though,Mojang should add some mobs too.
