Pros I noticed:
Everything about the horses is cool - leads, armor, hay, name tags. Had a blast riding them around earlier.
Flew around to a few nether fortresses and the loots are very very good in most of them.
Resources packs and new hunger system are quite nice from what I can tell.
Neutral: I like the stained clay, but personally I think the "claylike-tinge" on the blocks is a bit weird, mainly considering white looks like pink and black looks like brown, etc. The block itself looks really nice, the colors will just need to be worked around slightly.
Cons:
Not too many, really. I personally am not a huge fan of the look of the launcher myself - its very bland feeling, like something you'd have seen in a computer program in the Windows XP type of graphics. Some of the features in it are cool, but aesthetic wise it could use some work.
---
Also, the charcoal retexture looks nice, and the coal block looks like it would be good to use as asphalt to make roadways in a town type build and such.
Overall, a great update!
May I add on to the cons if you don't mind?
Current nether fortresses do not spawn blazes or wither skeletons anymore, even if there are blaze spawners. To get more to spawn, find a new fortress in new chunks. It is a bug though.
I'm not going to update myself, I usually play with mods or modpacks like Hexxit anyway. I do not like some of the changes, especially this:
Changed the idea of mob difficulty
Regional difficulty: The longer you spend in one area, the harder it gets
Scales with difficulty - items, enchants or AI improve with difficulty
Yeah. I don't like the first part. Unless your house doesn't fall under that, that's pretty rediculous.
Oh and then there's this part of the version history that I hate with a passion:
Hunger
Natural health regeneration now costs hunger points/saturation points
I'm not happy about that. So if I want to regenerate in combat I have to stuff my face? No thank you.
I found a glitch (don't know where to post this though) if you place a water bucket somewhere water is already at it will have the things meaning a block has broken, but water isn't a block so that shouldn't happen.
Okay. I have negative things to say about this. If you want to argue with me feel free.
First of all, I'm on an iMac. I can't right click anymore. So that means that I can't place down blocks.
Second. The launcher is hideous. It is to contemporary. It's ugly as heck. But that's not the biggest deal.
Third. The server that I play on is having difficulties with 1.6. I can't play on that server anymore because of the update.
So I just wanted to say thanks to Mojang for ruining my Minecraft fun. I will be downgrading back to 1.5.2 so that I can play on the server, and be able to place blocks! Thanks a lot.
First: Do you use a PowerPC based computer and/or java 5 or lower? Support for those was dropped.
Second: The launcher is not done yet. They wanted to get it functioning for the update. They will make it pretty soon. And who cares about the launcher looks anyway? You only have it open for like 3 seconds before clicking the login button.
Third: You can't always expect a server to be in the latest version RIGHT when the update comes out. It takes time to update plugins and other stuff.
Dunno if it's a bug or not, but when I checked my tame wolf, it looked to still have the wild wolf texture, just with a collar. I kinda like it, though!
EDIT: After logging off/on, it switched back to the normal tame wolf texture.
When an area increases in difficulty because of your stay, will it be permanent even if you were to leave the area for a while and come back? I would hate for an area where I have established a stable residence to be insanely filled with hard-to-kill mobs forever.
My dad is stuck in a minecart and can't get out with any key, I keep launching undergrowned and then magically appearing above ground. (We're both Mac users)
Some are having FPS issues with this...but I had them with 1.5.2, and this has cured them. Guess my setup is more compatable with this version...so whilst is bad for some..I'm happy!
Love the idea of the resource packs. Texture +
Love the horses lots. Just wish there was a craftable saddle, rather than having to search for dungeon chests to find one. Just want to craft one, and go riding!
Really like the idea of the increasing difficulty. Keeps the challenge going. As a compulsive castle builder, it really does appeal to me
carpets, clay blocks, redstone blocks ( at last.... )are all bonus stuff for me.
It's all good!
Also, for added amusement, are all the owners of pirate versions asking for help to update their games.
Wooo! Awesome!
However, now I've encoutered a bug where I can't play on Online mode anymore, with the new launcher. It just gives me the option Offline mode and logout
Auth server is very buggy the last 4 hrs (Since the release) :s
Dont use the "Default" profile. Create a new profile and select version 1.6.1, then you can log in normally.

how do I use texture packs now I put them in the resources folder and nothing
Use Dinnerbones fancy tool on one of the snapshot posts, it changes texturepacks to resourcepack layout. Resourcepack layouts are a little like the .minecraft folder except only the parts with textures and sounds.
The launcher acts more as a client-side server, and afaik this hasn't been implemented yet. So any launchers will need to be updated/redesigned to utilize this new method. Lots of client changes, so don't expect anything from the modders for awhile.
I can mod my game fine, just go here for a tutorial on how to put in mods, mods folder should also still work. It is more tedious though
So I can't get my Minecraft to work when I make a profile that plays on 1.5.2, it launches but the screen just turns black and starts multiple flashes of light that look to be in the shape of a minecraft skeleton. (I know they aren't but they are a similar shape just to give you reference.)
Also, damn, they fixed it so I can't play LAN with the same account as my brother by having one of us play offline and then turn the Wi-Fi back on and connect to the LAN Server.

Now its time to wait for bukkit! But as always, this is another great and fun update! Can't wait to play with my friends and ride our horses into the sunset!
I am new in Minecraft and I wonder, will the new things like the horses appear in the maps that I created in the previous version?

Very nice list though you have there.
Yes, but you have to go REALLY far out to load new chunks to find them.

Same with me, and people, don't give me any excuses about them not supporting Macs anymore, because every update has worked fine 'till this one.
I don't want to see a giant screen of code loading and then the launcher staying up in the background while the game is running.
