Finally!! squids dont randomly die in water anymore!!! but next bug they need to fix is when there are to many animals in 1 cage and lots escape and sometimes look like there carefully creeping out then they go back in thats so annoying and squids flying randomly out of flowingg water!!!! like if they want to fix this problem!
To have no backwards compatibility and make modders -- who have no budget -- scramble to try to keep up with their changes is not a move of an independent studio that's looking out for the people who drive Minecraft. Connected textures is one.
I feel like somebody came by and said "Hey, I'm going to kick down your sand castle, but don't worry, you can build a better one." And that's happened a couple of times, never actually being able to finish something without it being ruined by another "great update." That's a pattern, and unless it's changed, it will become a company protocol. It's a type of "built-in obsolescence" which is a cornerstone of closed systems.
Most of you are not going to understand it because you're not creating texture packs or adventure maps. But don't you do everything you can to fend off the creeper? Do you build cool forts in the mountains with the hope that one day the creepers will blown you to bits? If the game mechanics were mis-balanced so that you could never accomplish anything in Minecraft, would you continue playing it? No. But that's what's going on when they continue to break the game with every update. The people who are making things, the "creators", are seeing their work constantly destroyed. Eventually, they will go elsewhere.
All that's required is that 1.) Mojang continue to break the tools people use to create with. 2.) A better platform that is more friendly to creators comes available.
Those two conditions make the perfect storm, and they are growing. I speculate that if the creators go elsewhere, the livelihood of Minecraft will be placed in the hands of those who take screenshots of cakes, and frag each other in as many ways as possible. In other words, there will be hype and no substance. If you're a creator then you've already sensed this happening. Maybe you couldn't put a finger on it; maybe you rolled with the punches for fear of mob retaliation. But you knew something was happening. If it grows, it will mark Minecraft's descent, after the creators have moved on to friendlier pastures and the rest have had their way with her.
I hope to be the fool who foretold a future that never happened. Minecraft is awesome, like every bit of nostalgia from my whole life wrapped into one thing. That's why I'm rattling a sword: not to get attention like a hype-monger, but to forewarn as someone whose watched it happen a few times. And Mojang I believe to be simply lacking foresight, not being malicious. Maybe I'm being emotional here, but the bottom line is that Mojang lacks no budget to put in backwards compatibility and be friendly to the modders they are purporting to help.
Remember that Mojang are the creators and the modders are leeching off the game - why don't the modders just produce their own hugely popular platform that they can do what they want on.
Also I believe that if you don't use the new launcher you can have a 1.5.2 minecraft that never changes so that all your mods and textures will continue to work FOREVER - if it hurts so much why put yourself through it unnecessarily
And with the new launcher you can create profiles that have a minecraft 1.5.2 that you can duplicate and mod with only minor issues at present - such as having to use the provides program to transform your texture packs to the new resources pack (this seems to mean that Mojang has considered the modders and provided a way for them to continue to mod, odd that some myopic dipsticks can't (won't) see it)
THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE NEW API THAT MOJANG IS WORKING ON IS TO MAKE MODDING AND ADDING TEXTURE PACKS EASY - and as an outsider (to Mojang) I believe they are planning to get Minecraft to that stage and then the only changes will be via mods and texture packs.
Also remember that snapshots are not official release versions - the purpose of them is to try new features, have experienced users test the developments (snapshot users are free product testers, they probably thought that was a smart idea at the time) and fix reported problems.
To summarise - if snapshots are causing you problems - DON'T USE THEM - it is not compulsory. Sit back and wait for the next official release and then complain (you know you will have to, about something, ANYTHING)
Personally I am happy to be along for the ride, but I really hope the API is delivered SOON
The texture pack converter doesn't work. All it does is unzips my texture pack into a folder, turns some of the folders within the texture pack into unreadable corrupted generic files (it shows the type of file to be 'file', is the same name as the folder it replaced, and is 0bytes in size)
And it rearranges the names of a few textures improperly... needless to say it doesn't seem to work... unless the new format invloves using unzipped folders?
we've been "preparing for the mod API" for long enough for 2 maddens and 4 call of duty games to come out.
Would you rather them release a sequel to Minecraft and make you PAY for the mod API? Cause that's how madden and cod get their money, through over-budgeting and purposeful lack of features. Minecraft is being a consumer-friendly product be keeping the game one time pay and not releasing sequels that build very little on the story and do more to fix bugs and similar issues, but rather doing that progressively to the original.
Might I also add that the game is $25 USD where as most AAA games are averaging $60 USD, and if this is any reflection of the budget, you should be able to understand why Minecraft develops at a slower pace.
Why do they have to get rid of texture packs?, having them separated was nice now they are going to be merged in under one file every mod textuere pack? not happy bob just not happy
Furthermore, my not installing 1.6 has nothing to do with the minor texture pack change. Actually, it's more to do with the fact that I just don't think I like it.
And yes, I do run my own server.
If it's not the texture pack thing then why do you hate it??? and are you really going to hold back your entire server because you hate a update?

Hey guys! and thanks for making this awesome snapshot! its awesome!haha! I acually made a video about it and all its AWESOMENESS! i do all kinds of gaming videos and minecraft and my group has great commentary, according to the YOGSCAST! Please at least check it out! thats all i ask!

This modular package design of game resources is how pretty much every game does it today, in Minecraft's case it will go a pretty long way in the right direction (towards the mod API). This system will be no more difficult than the old texture packs, the format is simply extended and slightly altered for the possibility of including sounds, lang files, etc. Now people will be able to create sound packs that can be switched in the main menu, maybe some resource packs will come with custom maps that alter both textures and sounds in one convenient resource pack that is selectable from the menu, etc. Overall this will make things a lot more interesting.
Of course migration is always annoying but at least Mojang are supplying a little tool to do most of the work for you (only it supposedly needs some bugfixing at the moment).
I really hope the update will come out soon! I've been working on preparing stables and supplies for the new mobs, and I really don't want to have to wait another 1-2 months for this update. But I'm still confused on the resource packs and how to make them, and for the people who make them, they would not only have to re-texture all of the blocks/ mobs, they would have to replace the sounds for everything which of course I know that it's optional, but god bless who ever takes the extreme measures into doing so.
EDIT: I had a few reasons I checked on myself to tell you, but then I scrapped that when I realized Misa herself made a statement on the problems the texture pack change has caused.
Other than that there are the things that are extremely popular among texture packs, connected texture mods. In Mojokraft, two slabs on top of each other results in a different texture entirely from one full block of the same exact material. Windows being a continuous pane of glass instead of individual panels also relies on this, if I'm not mistaken.
I also am unsure whether resource packs properly function with better skies, but they very well could. I really enjoy having a custom moon, sun, and stars texture set myself.
Misa's texture pack is very incomplete without the aid of Optifine or MCPatcher, due to custom animations of mobs and items, CTM support, and better skies, among other things. You may not have noticed, but to those of us who do notice, it's very dissappointing to see how little resources packs actually, currently support.
Really, CTM needs some love. And I sure hope it gets it. Personal opinion it may be, but I honestly believe CTM is what MAKES a good deal of the texture packs I truly enjoy, so yeah.
I get what you're saying but, are you not forgetting the fact that the reason these advanced Optifine specific features don't work yet is because this is a snapshot and the Optifine developer don't usually go out of his way to update for a snapshot, which by definition can change at any point before release?
If I installed a fresh 1.5.2, these features wouldn't work for me either, if I hadn't installed Optifine.
Once Optifine gets caught up, everything will be back to normal just like it is every time.
*Disclaimer* If I have completely misunderstood how vanilla minecraft works and it can suddenly do these advanced features without Optifine then that's my bad.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
If Mojang didn't care about the current users, they'd have stopped updating the game long ago.
Did you know I write Science Fiction? Well I do. Check it out at http://planetretcon.com/books/

Doing that seems to crash the converter. It just closes instantly when i do.
and when It does work? It doesnt allow me to select the pack when changing it in game.
What the hell.

You need you get the Minecraft Dev launcher. I guess there should be a link to that in the OP.
