I don't think that an ore with just 2 functions that are directly related to redstone and most likely wouldn't be useful in nothing but slighty complex circuits is a good way to motivate players to go into the nether.
in a few mins I was able in my test world to turn the hopper a chest and a furnace into an automatic smelting system, it even lets me know when a stack is done! (the furnace turns off until the output is cleared)
Sounds pretty cool, I hope the chest interacting with redstone makes the release, heck it would be nice to have any of these. I'll have to try this out.
This will be amazing when 1.5 comes out. Right now I am too worried about things bugging out and ruining my saved file to download the developmental version, but I will be one of first in line to try it out when this stuff comes out. I love the idea of nether bricks, daylight sensors that use a new nether quartz, redstone blocks, trapped chests, and what looks like it will be an extremely useful tool, the hopper. I am really excited and on top of that the wiki it says they are planning on adding a couple other things with rails, which look pretty cool too. For the record, my redstone friend Sean is extremely happy and excited. xD
First thing I noticed was lots of trees and snow in strips. The trees were all lined up with some cut in half top to bottom. But the funniest was the snow.....
Tested this same world (seed -9971654452868769949) with the update 13w01b and got the same pattern in the snow and the trees being delted / cut in half so I guess this glitch is not fixed yet.
Yes. Trap chests have a slight red ring around where the gray latch is. You have to be looking for it to see it. Random_Guy_32 must be red/green color blind. To people who are red/green color blind, red and green both look like the color of chests. So I've been told.
He could also be monochromatic as I am.

Eventually, someone will, utterly by accident, click my reputation up.
I KNEW they would a Nether Ore to the Nether eventually. Now we have a whole 3 legitimate reasons to go there (Blaze Rods, Wither Skelly Heads & Quartz) besides spamming building materials!! Wooo!

Define Cute (choose 1): A) Creepers Aerbunnies C) Herobrine. If you chose A): You appeal to destruction and to stereotypes. If you chose B): You are a perfectly normal person, and enjoy the Aether Mod. If you chose C): Please leave the planet now before you set off a nuclear warhead--no one enjoys mass murders, however nice they might seem to you.
The first two could be added later, but I don't see the last one being changed with the current design. It would be much more useful if we didn't have to drop a height level while extracting from containers.

Yeah. The worst part about it is that it's not even finished yet, hopefully much more work goes into it.
The hopper is a pretty cool idea, however I hope they work on it more.
For instance, It can be connected to and from a furnace, however it only recognizes the top slot, and if you have a hopper below it, it will take it from the top slot. (EDIT: actually, it sends things there first, then moves on to the others when that is full, but a hopper below will remove anything)
If they added some logic to it, it could be amazing;
1. A hopper above the furnace will put a smelt-able material in the top slot (smelting) if it is free.
2. A hopper on any of the sides will put a burnable material in the bottom slot (fuel) if it is free.
3. A hopper below the furnace will accept any smelted materials, an pass them to its output if one is available.
If they did that, you could place ores/wood in one chest, and coal/planks in another, and it would transfer them to a furnace to smelt.
However, it seems like they will be made of iron, and there is not yet a way to make items travel upwards....
you can attach a chain hoppers (and chests or any type of inventory if you like) to each other to move items, but hopefully they add pipes, conveyor belts, or something instead.
To build on that, hopefully they actually separate the transportation and collection of materials, where the hopper itself does both, and there is piping that just moves items/materials. Piping would allow items to flow upwards. (also, maybe piping would have less storage than a hopper, but move items much faster). That, and hopefully the hopper gets some sounds, a bit of a "funneling" animation on items sucked in.
maybe even make some way items can just fall (say, from a pipe somehow) but only in that circumstance (still allowing hopper storage and later moving of materials) so it would be possible for items to fall without using a dispenser.
While the hopper would not grant direct control like an allocator would, If that was done, with the ideas I just stated you could use redstone to make a dispenser shoot an item into a hopper, move those by pipes, the item falls out of a pipe (imagine a storage system where items all get collected into a single pipe when they're called), into a hopper, then travels more and falls out of a pipe at your feet.
Now you've got a system like the one with powered tracks and minecarts they showed a while back, only it gets to you faster, is more compact and easier to wire. Also, it probably would work better for collection than storage (because chests are larger than dispensers), although if hoppers and pipes were able to be moved by sticky pistons it would change everything....

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.

The redstone block is awesome!
The light sensor can be used as a large time scaled clock
The wieghted pressure plate maybe can measure some sort of pressure or used as a counter?
By the way, I hope there will be a nether quartz block, lol
The trap chest signal doesnt seem to work for me...
also, i just posted this for my 42th post
It's very weak for 1 player (according to the wiki it gets stronger for more players opening the chest), however, you can just hook a repeater up to it to get a full redstone signal.

The hopper will be very useful though.
It's about time, Jeb, thanks for ze block.

Well it is Welsh for miner. Don't even ask how to pronounce it LOL.
howabout adding quick sand, that would be fun i know it is the redstone update but you can add quick sand in any kind of update
