Beacuse usually, easier translates to less effort, which translates into worse quality. There are two sides to each coin.
What the hell are you talking about? It doesn't take less effort to create a texture and put it into terrain.png than creating a texture and saving it as a separate file.
This new method of texture packing seems like a pain, though I am glad they added a converter. I was just getting a texture pack ready for release but this is going to put it back a bit
I see how this would make mod textures a bit easier and for the usage of outdated texture packs; but in the future editing seems cumbersome with all of those files.
To be honest, the only advantage I see with this format would be easier support for animations.
And how will the connected texture mod play into all of this?
I am pretty upset about this separate terrain files for blocks. It will make the game slower! Say bye bye to all good HD texture packs since it will make it harder to edit on and make. I'm not updating this, I WANT Misa and other texture packs! I don't want low quality textures! Mojang PLEASE get rid of that feature!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i found a bug with using animated hd textures on water, lava, and possibly more things. still liquids work fine, but flowing liquids just use the top left 16x16 part of each frame. balls to this.
YAY!
I love the new texture format. Makes a lot more sense, and there's basically infinite texture compatibility now MIX AND MATCH TEXTURE PACKS!

also this new nether ore will be interesting.
On the new texture system: thank god. We have an easier way to change individual textures now, which I think is better than the old spreadsheet system. Sure, it's buggy and old pack makers will have a bit of trouble converting to the new format, but is it really that bad? Plus, as some people stated, they get put together at runtime, so there may only be a slight increase in loading times at startup/pack switch.
Better Skeleton Aim: Really? Why? They're broken enough as it is, especially with some of the overpowered buffs map makers give them (take Hypixel's latest maps and Pyramid Adventure, for example). No need to make them more difficult!
Naming mobs: Another great change. Mostly for map makers, but hey, it's a nice touch. No longer fighting Captain Huk in Wrath of the Fallen and seeing "b2jammer was slain by Zombie".
Death Messages: Unnecessary, like before, but a nice touch nonetheless.
New Quartz Blocks: could have better textures, but good for marble-esque decorations. Finally we can make better Greek/Roman temples, etc.
Activator rail: Besides TNT, what else is it good for? We should get dispenser carts or something too so it gets more uses. Just sayin'.
Container Comparators: Cool. I'd love to find uses for this.
New Hopper Function: Interesting, but less useful.
New Hopper Recipe: Unless you hate using tracks a lot (which is much more efficient BTW), crafting lots of hoppers is a bad idea, and really slow. I like this recipe because of that, actually. And it makes more sense.
Smooth Stone Slab's Removal: Again, why? Maybe if you give it a different ID, considering it was never an actual "slab" to begin with, but it was fun decorating with it.
Minecarts with chests in abandoned mineshafts: makes more sense, but again, kind of unnecessary.
Overall opinion: Sure there are many problems with the snapshot, but hey, that's what snapshots are for, right? In general, they are heading in a positive (and very MODular) direction. Really shows that they're preparing for the Mod API (hopefully we won't have to wait until 1.6 or later, but considering their progress with it, we just might). What happens after that is anyone's guess.

you have to deal with it, there are a lot of people who like it, because it simplifies everything for the texturepack artist (just like me), I feel sorry for all HD Texture Pack Artist (but, in fact I do not like HD (Minecraft = pixels (not photos)))
