Since the most recent weekly snapshot, Singleplayer games run a local multiplayer server. To make this change even better, Mojang wants to make multiplayer servers feel more like how singleplayer games used to feel.
To help with this, there is a thread right here, where they are trying to collect all differences between the most recent released Singleplayer game (1.2.5) and the most recent Multiplayer game (12w18a). If you want to help, please comment on this post with the following information:

I think its cool. I just hope it won't have the multiplayer problems like boats and minecarts and more. Many times I have been playing singleplayer and I wanted to invite my brother to play a bit.
Ok, this is just wrong. No one is going to update until there is one update that brings back singleplayer again. Nice going Mojang. This better not happen, or you actually might lose money.
its TERRIBLE
some people can barely run servers. i had a framerate of 20 - 90 normally now its 10 - 20. and no ability to pause the game, are you high
this also makes risugamis modloader invalid. and what about other mods. they will need to be re coded ant that will take forever.
this will destroy minecraft if the crossover goes ahead
STOP COMPLAINING!
Mojang knows what theyre doing and theyre smarter than a bunch of 4 year old complainers. They
know what to do and what not to do with the singleplayer/multiplayer thing.
Why do you get so upset about it? all it is is you can invite other people to your singleplayer world,
Why do you get so mad about that? Its not like all your worlds will be deleted or something.
The idea is alright, it has pros and cons, I would prefer if when you make a world you could choose when creating the world if you want it to be complete single player or the cross over of ssp and smp. This would stop those people from complaining and make everybody else happy.
It could also change their functions, like singleplayer would not have the glitches it now has.

I'm not much of a complainer, but the issue is that, for some people, it causes increased lag and, as I have found, creates more bugs. (However, I am sure Mojang will correct these problems.)
Well Mojang depends on it's customers to make money, and if it's customers don't like some update or something, then they lose money because people tell their friends about this update and not buy minecraft. But this may not be the case. If the singleplayer-multiplayer update were to be in a full version, it would be better if Mojang made two full versions, 1.3.0_a and 1.3.0_b. The second one would not have the SSP-SMP merge.
The best thing Mojang should do is add an option to have a "private" single player world, where others couldn't join and Minecraft would run with normal single player features (Actually pausing on pause menu).
Also, I am unfamiliar with how others can join your single player world in this snapshot.
"make it possible for you to invite people to play on your local computer without setting up a server."
People wanted it in the begining and now is hated, people before this snapshot loved the idea of a merge of SSP and SMP and now they are hating. Its the fan base wanting a certain additions that have them add them.

Keep in mind that this is only a snapshot, meaning there's plenty of time to optimize and fix things to make the game run much better. Overall though you won't have to worry for some time about this being in the actual game as it will probably be part of the Modding API update most likely.
As a final note, in the end the decision to combine single player and multiplayer to run the same way makes things more consistent and means that if a bug exist they don't need to fix it in two separate places. This also means modders only have to create one mod that will run on both "single player" and "multplayer" as they are both the same. In the end it's the probably the best decision for the growth of minecraft.
I love the idea and easy server setup, now no port-forwarding is required, as minecraft performs it for you. The problem is, however, when mods are released/updated, they will not be compatible without major rewritting, which will take twice as long as the original coding, I think. I'm not complaining, I love the idea and the way it works. The mods, lag and pause glitches are all the bad side, though.

Thereby negating the purpose for the whole architecture change.
I HATE THIS IDEA i mean this is the game i play when theres no internet and now ssp is going to smp which NEEDS INTERNET THIS SUCKS!!!
No. It doesn't. This was already gone over in the 12w18a news page.I wonder how many of the people who are complaining right now own a server. And I wonder how many of those are hosting it. And I wonder how many of those aren't tiny laggy piles of turd. 0? What a surprise.

How would someone invite others?

WHY ARE PEOPLE BEING HYPOCRATES!
The game as it is, is pretty broken. They need to focus on other issues before this, or smp better get ALOT better.
