This week, Mojang has begun the long process of separating the server logic from the client. They hope to make it easier to add features in the game going foward - essentially not having to program in game additions twice, for two functionally different "Minecrafts" - and also to make it possible for players to invite their friends to play on their local computer without setting up a server. While the intent to begin migrating was announced in the past, this Snapshot begins taking the first step into realizing it fully. Note - the changes are NOT complete, but the game should run normally.
Now, on to the changelog:
More fixes to silk touch and block picking
Wooden tools work in furnaces
Villagers spawned from spawning eggs will get a random profession
Updated language files
Miscellaneous editions
The download links are slightly different than prior Snapshots - the link below is the client ZIP, not JAR; it contains both client-side and server-side JAR files. The Server JAR link is as it has been for previous Snapshots.

Enjoy this first glance into some very exciting changes!
Wow - I am a little confused....* The client now comes with both the client-side and the server-side JAR files. The file called “minecraft.jar” should be in your “.minecraft/bin” folder as usual, and the “minecraft_server.jar” file should be in a folder called “.minecraft/server”. (from Mojang.com)..... Does this mean each client needs to add a folder in the .mainecraft folder called server and add the server.jar file there?. Is this in addition to the actual server updating the server.jar file.
I need to explain - I have a home network, a server and 2 other computers, the server runs minecraft (amoungst other things) and the 2 other computers can connect to the minecraft game on the server, as can 2 other players via the internet. Do I need to update the server.jar (separate file) on the server.....AND / OR update the clients to have a /server folder with the server .jar file from the zip file on each client?
This is gonna **** the server hosting company's off so much it wont even be funny. also.... I kinda like playing signal player with out ppl MESSING UP MY BUILDS!!!!
Doesn't having the players to authenticate for their single player maps to the log in server put a much greater load on the log in server?
Now there isn't just smp traffic to it, now there's all those people that don't play smp logging in every time they play too.

its kinda to late not to port forward i have a classic server, also you bring up a good point most people don't know how to port forward and there for if minecraft doesn't add a port forwarder what is the point of this? (yes i know you can pay to have a service port for you but i think that that is bs to pay some one to do something you can do your self)

I'm sure if it becomes an issue they will deal with it. It wouldn't be that hard to make the server not bother to check authentication if the connection is coming from localhost.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Yeh sure
They never said they'd quit updating after Minecraft's official release.
The greatest thing in this snapshot for me.
Now there isn't just smp traffic to it, now there's all those people that don't play smp logging in every time they play too.
*cough whitelist *cough
*cough don't port forward cough*
*cough Firewall *cough
There are plenty of ways to prevent this,
yes... a much greater load. very good point
