Exactly its just Notch tricking everyone into paying more :wink.gif:. No, but seriously I think the pre-releases are cool and all but if this is what Notch considers the final game then there should not be pre-releases. I am not saying no updates, because all games update with cool new features but the pre-releases kind of show off bugs that a full game should not show off and also shows the weakness that Mojang cannot spot their bugs in testing.
The pre-releases are there so we can give our input before they make any definate changes to the game. If we don't like it, they will change it before putting it in the game. And Mojang can't discover all bugs by their own, some bugs only happen for . And all games have bugs, Skyrim being a noteable example. It's a full game developed by a "real" game company, not an indie company, and has more bugs than Minecraft had in it's entire history.
Jeb recently stated that Mojang plans on doing weekly "snapshot" pre-releases for players to test. The pre-release builds are patched much as before - you must manually copy the test .jar over your existing one - and aim to playtest various fixes, additions and such to future official releases. You can test this week's pre-release by downloading the .jar file here, and copying the downloaded file over your current minecraft.jar file.
Jeb notes that this pre-release is very close to what version 1.0.1 will be - feel free to test it out and offer feedback!
Love how people are complaining that they're putting out prereleases of free updates. Where's your non-Alpha "I have to PAY for updates?!" wank now? You get a new update prerelease free and optional not even a week after full release, and you're already complaining?

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. (Source)
Anything built within Minecraft, using only Minecraft, without using bugs, is legit.
If you don't want to build mob traps, that's fine. Just don't tell us it's cheating.
For Those talking about Mojang being a small company... are you kiding right? I mean, they sell more then 8000 units of the game each day, that gives them $160,000 every freakin day! They don't HAVE to be a small company!
With just two hours of sells, they could afford the salary of about 10 people just to test over and over each build they have (and obviously they would build several structures and mechanisms that would help them test the most common bugs that pop out once in a while).
Then, they could release official and more stable builds (like it was before beta 1.7) to the entire community, it would obviously still have bugs, but would be way better than their (boring and broken) pre-releases every week!
Before people reply me, I know it's FREE, and I know I'm not forced to download it, but I still think that updates gets to fragmented and confusing this way.
The first one isnt exactly a bug in the new prerelease, if a bug at all. I'm on 1.0 and putting a redstone torch under the blue block does not activate the piston, however, putting the redstone torch on either side of the piston, behind the piston, or under it does activate it.

If you have Steam if you look through all of their updates 90% of them are bug fixes for games thats officially been released...even after months on the market MANY games are still getting bug fixes.
Left 4 Dead 2 comes to mind...

Great Servers, Great Prices, Great Customer Support, What more could you ask for?
I like this idea of continued pre-releases. Blizzard does well with their own PTRs, so this helps a lot with bug-hunting. It's also good to know that Minecraft isn't being left to collect dust.

How 'bout our daily dose of TF2 patches? It's no small wonder Valve has such a good standing reputation.
They should just add some sort of Mod thing that makes it easier for developers to mod the game files and another feature that allows the client-side to easily mod their game instead of going through the .jar. More people have made mods than the owners have made updates and the updates are usually minimal.

The game is released, it had to be released at some point, it couldn't be in Beta forever.
As for pre-releases, I think its a good thing. They are not part of the "forced" update that people have to download, it is optional for the players that want to do it. Mojang is striving for a community orientated game, and really they are excelling at it. They are making the game they way the community wants, and they are giving the community a hand every step of the way to help and be involved.
Yes, "commercial" companies do not do this, and they bring out their new patch already "bug-tested" and you know what? theres still millions of bugs. The way Mojang are doing it gives each individual player (playing in their own way/style) to be able to give feedback they may not of noticed. Its a twittered download, not advertised, the only people who advertise it are the ones who make these kinds of threads.
What I'd say Mojang does is a quick overal bug testing, then give it out to determine each and every bug each player gets, When 3 people get the same bug that others do not, this can help them narrow down how exactly that bug occurred.
In essence Minecraft is a community orientated game that strives to involve the people in each stage of its acheivements.
