Of course 1.9 is going to be awesome! This is likely to be the last content update before they stop adding content on October 18th (at least, I think that's the date). After that, they'll be working exclusively on bugfixes and optimization up until release. After release we'll get new stuff again, so don't worry.
The game is evolving! This is epic. I love where Minecraft is going. Everything is still in place but major things keep getting added.
Haters gonna hate, Minecraft is maturing into a full game.
I've been away from the minecraft scene for quite a while.
This will pull be straight back into singleplayer for sure. Can't wait for boss mobs as well.
Writable books would make it perfect.
Oh one more thing..... THAT TORCH!!! IS KILLING ME!
I was kinda hoping that Minecraft would take the more obvious Post-Zombie-Apocalypse approach, considering that the only other inhabitants of the world were primarily zombies with the same body size, shape, and clothing as you. I would of preferred to see the random villages as either survivor villages, or filled with Zombie spawners to know they've been over run.
Even having the potions and a bit of magic could be good if they played along with the rest, like if some of the villagers were infected, and you could help brew potions to cure them, and yourself if you get infected, and they could reward you with experience and magical books, since they seem like magical beings instead of just regular humans.
But anyways, I'm not too concerned about how Minecraft turns out, because Jens himself said that he doesn't expect people to just be sticking to Vanilla Minecraft, once the games released and the modding API has been released, there will be SO many full conversion mods popping up, and we'll be able to customize the game to our own liking.
Mojang is just building the base game for the community, it's really the community who's going to make it great.
I agree with those above who were concerned with Minecraft's new magical direction. So far the game has been pretty safe, morally speaking--no blood, no gratuitous violence, no immorality, etc. With it's focus on creation, exploration, survival and whatnot it's been the kind of game you didn't have to be ashamed to play or tell others about.
If magic is added, things will have to change for those with a moral compass. Hopefully we can continue to play the game, assuming the magic parts can be avoided. If not we may have to leave behind an otherwise acceptable game. Most likely I won't be able to discuss the game with those unfamiliar with it, and I'll almost definitely not be able to recommend it to others.
With that said, the rest of the additions look great and are already a lot of fun! I hope to see more of these.
tl;dnr Magic makes me
I agree 100%, Minecraft's magic is going to make Minecraft yet another game I secretly play... Actually I probably won't do much playing with this lame ass magic BS. I loved the game when it didn't have much meaning or a "purpose". It was a 3D enviorment that you could do WHATEVER you wanted to it. Now, it's about casting magic spells on eachother and playing willie-nillie enchant meant with your magical rods, while the other mobs look at you like you're an idiot.

So before this, the game was nothing but killing pigs and nothing but killing pigs?
No?
It's a sandbox game that lets you do whatever you choose?
Oh yeah, that's right, you can just ignore the magic if you choose. It's not something you're forced to go out and take part in. It's not like you need to craft a magical sword and cast 40 enchantments to cut down your first tree.
If you don't like the magic, there will never be a time that you'll need to use it.
i think its just a decoration or a new abandoned library tht has a book tht like has a quest and wen u complete
the quest you'll get like a 100 skillpoints
just my thinkin
Dont update, and go back to terraria, And notch will not change it!
This is making the perfect game!!
I want it to go more in the direction of evolution, guns and grenades and vehicles and an iron crafting table for that stuff
Eventually a laser gun and space travel to the moon portal style :biggrin.gif:
I'd prefer a cauldron to some weird potion holder o.O
