Were the writers aware that the word "permadeath" would make so many people angry? Also, is that even the correct word for what is really being implemented? If my recollection of the post was correct, it should have been called something more descriptive like "level reset" or something. I apologize if I got the details wrong.
Feel free to flame me for not being in the suggestions forum for something in the title of an announcement.

WOAH, WAIT. Our eyes take pictures? Please tell me I can recover these pictures from another person.
You have to stick a thumb drive up their nose, drag and drop the pictures onto it, and then load them through your ear.
Anyways. If I may make a random theory/suggestion.
Hunger: I could see this as a measurement of efficiency rather than an "OMG UR AT FUL HUNGR U LOSE HELTH NAO!" thing that the current hunger mod I know of has. In fact, the hunger mod is probably the base reason as to why many of the people I saw around the beginning of this thread are/were raging over it. Now, 1.7 Minecraft Pistons are different than the Piston Mod Pistons, weren't they? Notch never said (that I know of) that he was going to copy over the hunger mod into the coding of Minecraft. Anyways. Continuing with my theory. So, I could see this as something like, at 0... fullness (bar completely empty), your character would have normal efficiency, breaking blocks, running, etc at the current rate he normally does. Having full fullness (bar completely full), your character might break blocks, run, or whatever at 2 times the speed. Or 3. Or whatever. That would allow people who don't want hunger not to suffer from it, and those who would want to upkeep the hunger to gain a bonus for their efforts.
Leveling: Leveling would probably just increase certain stats. Such as. Maximum health, base damage resistance, maximum fall distance before damaged, etc. Logically, your character going and hunting monsters would make him stronger, as if someone is thrown into the wilderness and survives for five years. They will probably be tougher than before they were thrown into the wilderness, unless they were prepared with a bunch of stuff (i.e. in minecraft, TooManyItems). At level 1 you would just have the capabilities that you would normally have (10 Health, 0 base damage resistance, etc)
Permadeath: While there isn't much to speculate on, there's two things I can see it doing that wouldn't "ruin" the game. 1. You lose a percentage of your total exp and your hunger bar is depleted. This is probably what Notch is doing and is what I saw in the PC Gamer link. 2. After dying a certain amount of times, your spawn is reset and your stats reset. There's really not much else to expand on.
"Against all the evil that Hell can conjure, all the wickedness that mankind can produce; We will send unto them... only you."
Colored text indicates in-character statements/actions. Because Forum Games has basically just been a big open RP for a long time now and it's the only place I ever post anymore, when I post at all.
Wow.. I'm disappointed in all of the people who are writing on this thread. PLEASE READ MORE BEFORE YOU POST
Anyone who knows anything about the Adventure mode should understand it is just that.. a SEPARATE GAME MODE. THIS WILL NOT AFFECT ALL YOUR SAVES
It is a separate game mode, just like survival is serpate from creative or classic. Do you think everyone that played creative started to complain like "OMG Notch you're adding health? What? Mobs? THIS IS MADNESS!" "Minecraft isn't a RPG! Don't add crafting and monsters this is dumb! PETITION AGAINST IT!!"
Of course not... this is just a different direction. The hunger and experience/leveling will probably be a part of the "Hardcore" or "Realistic Modes" that may include Perma-death. So please stop your senseless complaints about "OMG WE NEED TO MOD THIS OUT"... It's OBVIOUSLY going to be a separate mode, so just calm down kids!!
Remember back in the days when Notch hadn't sold out to ideas like these he is talking about now? I can still remember the days (As if it's really been that long :tongue.gif:) that Notch said he would never make Minecraft RPG style, that he wanted to avoid that, that that was not the idea nor focus of Minecraft. Clearly he has lost track of what the focus of Minecraft was suppose to be.
I'm not saying the update is all bad or anything, but it seems a lot like he is selling out to 'trendy' and 'popular' ideas. I just hope that when Minecraft is released it is still the game I bought back in Alpha... He needs to keep focus on what is goal was, if he wants something different, wait till Survival mode is done then make a new one.
THIS. IS. BS!
He said way earlier he'd add hunger and other stuff. Also, how is Minecraft an rpg? You don't grind. If you read the news thing, you would know that you get exp and levels automatically.
Nice now add different classes!
We already have a miner, we want mages, swordsman, archers.....
And wahat about a name change?
World of minecraft sounds good
I think a lot of you have misunderstood the post, the Permadeath revolves around Leveling, so you get so far in levels and if you die, you lose all of your level progress like a classic Rougelike game(Along with your inventory).
From my understanding of what 1.8 is suppose to be about, it's suppose to be about Adventure Mode, which provides a game mode SEPARATE, from Survival. While hunger and leveling could both be added to survival (Hunger should be a big part of survival.)
As stated in the articles on PC Gamer, Notch is not sure how Leveling is going to work so turn panic mode, He may only put it in Adventure mode, leaving Survival to Health and Hunger.
Whatever he does, I couldn't care less. You don't have to level if you don't want to, but Rougelike's have very fast leveling, and Minecraft it self is largely based off of the Rougelike genre (From procedurally generated worlds to being very unforgiving)
tl;dr: Permadeath = Losing levels and inventory (Not worlds). Leveling = Possible Adventure mode only, as that is what 1.8 is about. Read the entire article.
Why are people still going on about adventure "mode" its going to be part of the game. I imaging toggling difficulty will toggle things like hunger and permadeath. Id still like further definition from the mouth of notch as to what these things will entail before I, unlike what seems to be the majority of the Minecraft community spouts of my thoughts as definite fact based on solid truths in my mind. Notch has been pretty vague about a lot of things about this update, and you probably don't know what you're talking about. Especially with stuff like this where he's leaked something and not given any real information about exact contents, so its up for the wildest speculation and before you know it you have a bunch of whiney screamy minecrafters bitching and complaining about something that doesn't even exist yet.
the Adventure Update in 1.8 is going to be a mind blowing addition to Minecraft, regardless of what it contains past what we already know for sure. IF it changes the gameplay, I'll just change how I play. I've spent the last 48 hours grinding away on the Aether mod and its almost like I forget I'm playing Minecraft at times, then I fall back to earth and its a reality check. I have a feeling the new mechanics to be added in the next update will be earth-shatteringly amazing for the world of Minecraft.

Yes.
Hypocrite, there is no adventure mode.
