Who defines that permadeath means deletion of the world? No one.
Minecraft is very unique compare to other games with permadeath - separation of the player and the world. It could just define it's own permadeath i.e player permadeath - experience/levels/inventory
ugh.. I didn't want minecraft to become like this. It's getting too realistic. I didn't like that. Hunger? Bleh. Oh well, i appear to be in the minority not looking forward to this. I'll give it a try anyways.
Definitely needs to be toggle-able. If not, it should only be a half penalty. Otherwise it would be a little frustrating, in addition to the frustration in losing your diamond armor and other stuff.
I mean, imagine if you lost all your exp in World of Warcraft, Rift, or any other MMORPG if you died. That would suck! (Yes, I realize that Minecraft is a totally different game with a totally different playstyle.)
I don't like the permadeath idea at all. This is a building game.. Not a go out and kill monsters to level up game... I personally do not like what notch is doing.

You'd have to be banned when you died. That's the only possible solution.
So perma-death is nearly impossible on SMP.
Also, I once posted a topic about how all armor is being removed as you can see, in 1.8 .
It will be replaced with a much more useful Ham Level.
You guys haters need a life... First was Creative mode, where you could only build, then when alpha began, notch introduced us to survival mode... For the love of all that is not $hitty, THIS IS ADVENTURE MODE, NOT SURVIVAL MODE!!!! We are going to have an option to play either survival or adventure. Plus the update is not released yet.

I spent plenty of time playing Rogue 20 some years ago. I got tired of it and quit. I have zero interest in seeing that style of gaming come to Minecraft.
I think the higher your level the harder enemies get and the more chance of bad things. You don't get stronger, become a better miner. Plus that would suck anyway. No he states quite plainly

Perma Death: Permanent Death maybe? I do hope this is toggle. Like when you start the new world. You choose your toggle on and off.
Overall I think it will become %100 harder. Game gets harder and you lose your whole world on death.
Ouch... I won't be in caves as much then. I jump enough in those, and the fear of death will make things scare me more.

really, some of us just want to have fun hunting and building! Who wants to have to waste half your inventory on food in case you run low?
No thanks. I'd prefer that there simply be options to turn those "features" off if we don't want to deal with them.
it's doesn't really change the style much. if you don't want to gain xp, don't fight. if you like fighting, you can get more challenge by gaining xp since mc mobs are too easy to beat, just annoying. i'm in favor of every part of this update.
