I've played on a server just like this. When i mined I got levels in mining, and the same went towards everything else. It was actually kind of fun. The hunger was a bother only because it went up too fast, but I know Notch will balance it.I actually am looking forward to these new updates, but also I would like an Adventure Mode along with it too, where you cant place blocks and its a PURE RPG feel, while still having these updates in Minecraft Survival.
MUDs were like that and I have to say that once the "new" wears off of it you'll find it to be annoying as all hell when you have to grind your way back to the level you were at before for the 30th time.
This is one of the reasons I stopped playing MUDs over a decade ago. Leveling is a royal effing pain in the ****. As for RPG, forget it. If I wanted an RPG feel then I'd play WOW or Runescape. I quit both years ago because I had learned to hate RPG's and, among other things, leveling. I happen to like Minecraft SSP mode largely the way it is now. NPC villages & such sound great. This RPG stuff on the other hand blows major chunks and will only ruin a nearly perfect game if it's not toggleable.
At any rate, I'll give 1.8 a fair shake however I am also burning backup copies of my current Minecraft setup and world saves to DVD just in case. I strongly recommend everybody else do the same.
Well! Too many post here. I add one for the luck:
I don't think we will be lvl 1, lvl 2, lvl 3, etc... I think the experience bar will fill when play, break block, craft objects, kill mob, harvest, etc... Probably You will get some little "upgrade" when you reach the full bar : maybe faster block breaker, more damage wih weapons, etc... And when you die....You have to restart to fill the XP-Bar. Perfect circle that fits on the mincraft style. The challenge will be to keep the bar full as long as possible. Maybe en achievement like "10 days without dying".

I once played on a SMP server that had a levels mod on it that was sort of like that and I have to say... I hated it and never returned.
1.8 is NOT making minecraft an rpg. rpg stands for role-playing game, ie it tells a story that you take part in. Just because there's leveling doesn't mean its an rpg. It still a sandbox game, you can still do whatever you want, there's just the added bonus of levels.
Permadeath just means you lose your experience when you die, you wont lose your world.it doesn't need to be toggleable,or modded out..
Its bold and underlined, so people can see it.
I can see where leveling might be "fun" the first few times but after say the 20th or 30th death from which you have to re-grind your way through the levels back to where you were, it's going to become tedious and annoying as all hell.
This is good. This is probably a bad analogy because of all of the CoD-haters out there, but I imagaine these levels to be like killstreaks in CoD, you don't need them, they are just a reward for being alive. You won't have to re-grind your way through the levels (P.S., you won't have to grind for levels, Notch has said before he does not like that style of play, one of the reasons he was against achievements) because you won't have to re-grind your way through the levels. They will probably just be a bonus for staying alive.
I cannot emphasize enough how much of a BAD IDEA these things are!
Minecraft SMP has two aspects: Survival AND creativity. Survival because monsters spawn. But you do not beat the game when you make a 4x4 wooden house. You continue to strive, build, and have fun WHILE surviving. That is the essence of Minecraft: Creativity (toolbox) meets survival (gaming). Without the former, this would just be another crappy sandbox-ish MMO. Without the latter, it's nothing but a gimp level-creator.
That's why we play SMP!!!
What's this going to be like with an XP bar we can grind up? ANY BENEFIT AT ALL from levels will result in grindy, hoarding, selfish gameplay.
And what, I'm building my castle and start to die of HUNGER every 10 minutes?!? So I have to keep an inventory full of pork just to fend off hunger while I build? Notch, this is a TERRIBLE IDEA!

Yep, every single thing in your post, is a terrible idea. However, we know nothing about how the appropriate systems actually work. Leveling could be as simple as "start at 3 hearts, gain one for every level up to 10 max hearts, die and start over" and hunger might be the equivalent of fatigue from the Elder Scrolls series in that combat, and sprinting pull from it, in addition to a depreciation as time passes, and takes 3 hours real-time to deplete on it's own before you start taking damage due to hunger.
Yeah, what you guys don't seem to realize is that the 1.8 update will likely add an adventure "mode" rather than changing the existing survival. Not to say that some of the additions wont appear in survival (referencing the giant mushrooms and other new blocks), but the leveling and permadeath would be exclusive to adventure.

Wrong. The Adventure Update will not include the Adventure Mode.
I for one am looking forward to all the new things that are being added. If there is perma death to where it locks you out of your world ( and I highly doubt that because Notch isn't that sadistic ) I'll just be backing up my one save file, and I do that anyhow.
I'm looking forward more to the NPC's and leveling just to see how minecraft will work with it. It's going to give me something to do other than build and mine. At least this way I have things to occupy me, rather than getting bored looking for diamonds after I've gotten a full stack.
Needless to say, I can't wait for this, and I'm stalking updates like a minecraft fiend.
Did they ever actually confirm that, or is that the public opinion based on a little bit of info?
Because from all that I've read, nothing has said that there won't be an adventure mode.
I could however be wrong, but that was just my prediction.
Permadeath should be toggleable for sure. if not then i think many might quit MC because of this. It should have a hardcore mode like Diablo 2 does so if you want to have more of a challenge than those players may do so. or have servers for hardcore MC fans.
**** all of you. If you don't like it play on the ****ing CREATIVE Mode that's coming with the update. You don't have to play the Adventure Gamemode.
No thanks. I'll take the current SSP mode with NPC villages Etc *WITHOUT* the leveling, exp, and so-called "permadeath". I farking *H*A*T*E* RPG's. One of the things I like about Minecraft is that IT'S NOT AN RPG!

I assure you, I do not consider levels to be a "bonus". It's a royal pain in the ****.

More to the point, nobody but Notch & his dev team knows ANYTHING about what is *really* going to be in this update. All we've got is dozens upon dozen's of posts with people giving their opinion / guess about what it is based on a pcgamer article that has almost NO actual content. Yeah it's got a few hints but that's it. What's really needed is for Notch & company to stop drip feeding hints and innuendo about what's going to be in the update and spell it out EXACTLY what will and will not be in it once and for all.
Maybe THEN the shitstorm will finally die down. Or get worse, depending on what those details are. In either case dribbling little clues about it is doing nothing but causing an uproar and a flood of rumors and assumptions that have absolutely ZERO basis in fact.
---- warning i has a sugestion for notch( if he ever reads this lol )---------
permadeath- you die and come back say a week later, npc vilages have grown, npcs have made homes in your base and taken som of your stuf ( you can find it but you have to look for it) crops have been alitle bit trampled and mobs have repopulated the mines--- as for leveling, no please.......no i started playing minecraft cuz it was an out of the box, new under the sun game, where my OWN knolage of the way of the block was the only leveling system, i mean face it, leveling games have been around sence the dawn of the Atari. i quit wow when i started playing minecraft- i would hate to see minecraft fall into that catigory of games- a lvl grinder.
and if you want to make the world seem realy timeles- ruins are cool....... but big trees are better... think giving trees a chance of being between 1 and 10 blocks thick. making them about 4 higher then the thicknes. make more tropical bioms have a 2-4 size range, grasslands 1-2 exe. cant wait for the update, thanks for taking the time to read my ranting lol, i cant add mods for some reson so what is out is all i have. !!1.8!!

So... you enjoy the game because you can do whatever you want, and because of that you're angry you're being given the option to do one more thing.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Also bigger.
