Permadeath? Eh... Hunger shouldn't be toggle-able but maybe permadeath should. Leveling sounds awesome but I don't want this game to leave the sandbox genre. It should be as survival as possible without removing that classic sandbox feeling.

No, I'm not some n00b that makes there username have to do with the game they're playing. There were no Endermen in Alpha. N00bs.
That is the big question... what's worth grinding over? I am afraid that with the leveling system we will either have extremely powerful characters or really really weak characters. Unless the hostile mobs also display level.
Don't get me wrong, I love rougelikes, but I just hope Notch implements this well. I feel like this could either make or break the game. Minecraft is not quite an rpg just because there is a leveling system either, there are many more steps to making an rpg; it's not just the leveling system. It's best we make judgements when 1.8 is released.
And I know most of you are jumping the gun here so I'm going to quote this snippet:
The Minecraft developer is still figuring out how players will level. “I’m not entirely sure on how the levelling is going to work, because that part isn’t as fun. We’re trying to figure out something that is fun, and kinda lightweight. We’re thinking of getting an automated XP system. It’s not implemented in any way that makes any kind of sense at the moment.”
Adding progression and permadeath could be a risky move for Minecraft’s vast playerbase. I asked Notch whether he’s concerned about ruining the purity of the game he’s created.
“It’s the biggest risk,” he acknowledges. “We have to make sure that it’s fun, and as streamlined as possible. I kind of figured out that a really good test of what works or not is when I go back to 1.7.3 – the previous version. If it feels like it’s lacking that feature, if it feels like it should be in there.
“But it’s what I like about roguelikes, like Nethack – everything is dangerous.”
thanks

well that's a scary thing to add.... well all i want is levelling and then coming back alive. only hardcore players would be ready to take on this challenge... id rather not. :l
thats major bs if they put permadeath in without a way to turn it off i might just quit minecraft altogether.
No no no. You're missing the point.
You start at level 1. i.e. Normal Minecraft
You can then quickly level (in Nethack you were level 5 within a few minutes, and that seems to be his inspiration). It does slow down over time, but nothing like WoW or EQ where you spend a month to gain a level.
And then... YOU DIE! OH NOES!
You're level 1 again. Normal Minecraft.
All you lose is your levels and, presumably, your gear if you died somewhere inconvenient.
I can deal with the hunger. That sounds really cool and just increases the survival aspect of the game. But the permadeath and leveling both sound very idiotic. You grind to increase your level, just to have a permadeath, still not totally sure what it is, that gets rid of your full inventory and your levels without a chance to retrieve either. So in the end, it turns out that you have no chance to be rewarded for your hard work.
NORMAL person?! You LIKE this crap. You're the retard. Minecraft is a SANDBOX game, not a flipping "LEVEL UP GAIS LEVEL UP THEN WHEN CREEPER GITS U UR D-E-A-D MUAHAHA NO SUCH THING AS RESPAWN ANYMOAR" type thing. Whatever that's called. Stop the flame war and shut up
Permadeath is not in the game, all he is saying is that as you level up it will become increasingly harder to survive, you always have lost your inventory. Nothing new there, just more risk, also there is speculation that the bar is for stamina, which allows you to do things not sure how it works or if it is a hunger bar.....although it could be if it requires you to eat to refill it....maybe needed for abilities to work....it could just be a limit for the day, refueled by sleep and/or food...we'll-see.
I am really hoping that the height limit gets changed, i hate these low worlds as i am used to the Rockies living near mountains, Valleys and Oceans.
