Notch has revealed that, after the Adventure Update, players will be able to run different game modes, including Creative - which will include, among other things, limited flight capabilities. In addition, players will allow mods to enter Creative mode on SMP servers running in a different mode.
We will continue updating as more information becomes available.
Herp derp lets take Minecraft Beta which I have spent months of my life on and force all of its multiplayer servers to regress into the old Creative Mode.
Of course it is optional, read the post and apply common sense
i hope the creative mode includes something similar to too many items. i find it fun to build all sorts of crazy buildings and contraptions. and i think he is referring to a mode in beta 1.8 as a creative mode not minecraft classic (creative)

Since 1.8 is still a significant time away, we’re going to have to stop being as secretive about it as we have. We’ll provide information about it as we go, but we’ll keep actual details secret. So, for example, we could say “added two new colors” without saying which ones, or “testing experience and leveling to see if it’s fun” without giving details on exactly how it works.
The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.
Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.
OMG this is going to be beast, but the thing is we have to wait for 2 months for 1.8 as per the patterns of release before so we still have 2 or more months we have to wait. But so far it is going to be really cool. The only thing they will have to worry about is not to hype the public too much or else when it comes out, it has to be awesome, because everyone will be so judgemental towards the release.

It's not a mod, it's a feature.
I don't often follow threads I post in. If you'd like a response about something, send me a PM.
Hope to hell it's optional then. I'd hate to see SMP go down the drain even more.
If you read, it is.

I want to fight mobs and have an adventure, I just don't want to have to worry about cleaning or repairing buildings.
