As I'm certain everyone is familiar with, traders offer goods in exchange for other resources. My idea would be for there to be miners occasionally inside mineshafts, or caves, offering food in exchange for resources. I.e. they'd give you some cooked beef in exchange for some of your iron. This would be useful if one ran out of food in caves. I feel like this is going to be shot down, like previous suggestions I've made, but I'm putting it out there anyways
EDIT: And more valuable resources (diamonds, emeralds) would offer better food items, like golden apples or just a higher quantity of the food offered
EDIT 2: Anyways, they look, bear with me, like villagers, but with miner's coveralls and spelunking hats, if you're familiar with them, probably coal and dirt on their faces, et cetera. As for trades, 5 coal for a steak, 3 iron for 5 steaks. Wait for it, a diamond for 20 golden apples. That last one isn't really serious. But I think you get the gist. They'd be rather uncommon, I'm not sure how to quantify it exactly, but you'd only find one per mine shaft, maximum, or they may not be there at all, if that seems reasonable. Obviously they can't be around mobs, lest they die, so they'd be somewhere out of the way, perhaps with an iron door or something barricading them

I think one per mineshaft is a bit too much. a max of one to a shaft, sure, but there shouldn't be one I. Every shaft.
i was thinking up an idea of sorts that was somewhat similar. What about instead of them being barricaded in, they spawn and despawn like any other mob (and can't be named) but when they do spawn they prevent mobs from spawnin within a small radius.
I honestly don't know how much I like the idea of trading ores for food alone. I think this idea might get a little more support if they traded hard to find items like diamonds, emeralds, and possibly gold, redstone, and iron on top of food. They could trade X amount of coal for X amount of Iron or X amount of iron for X amount a diamonds, emeralds, gold, and redstone. Some miners could also trade dynamite, furnace minecarts, TNT minecarts, and different types of rails.

I think that'd be a cool idea, I was just thinking in terms of food haha.

My concern here is, if I was a miner in the minecraft world, and I'm digging around a shaft and some guy comes up and ask what I've got to trade, I likely have the following things on me.
minning supplies
rations
things I've been minning
one of those things I can find more of while continuing to stay under ground. The other two are in limited supply.
So say your diggin around for diamonds, an some dude comes up to you and says "I'll trade you my diamonds for your sandwich" now if your not finding any diamonds, and you know you can go get another sandwich, sure, make the trade and head home. But if you just spent the morning doing back breaking labor to collect some diamond, your going to want to eat the sandwich, you've already got the goods. Furthermore anyone whos gone minning knows that you find plenty of the otherstuff while working towards the high end goods. You don't trade 10 coal for 5 iron and subsequently 5 iron for a diamond. If you do decide to do that, your most likely going to be charging a lot. Make the trades expensive for the player, cause that miner has all the stuff he needs. Know what I mean?

I do know what you mean, but it wouldn't be iron for coal or vice versa, I would just think that I've had it where I spent a lot of time mining and ran out of food, and since there's not really much food underground, it'd be a nice interface to be able to have, albeit occasionally useless. And again, it's not like villagers are any better whatsoever. "Why, three emerald for some shears? Gee, since I got emerald, I might as well." But it'd really be pointless because if you have emerald, by default, you have to have gotten iron at some point previously. Know what I mean?

I got you, but I was looking at the miners side. Poor guys going to starve to death a wealthy man If he gives you his chicken noodle soup for some gold lol.
I think that them spawning should be almost exactly like witches spawn in swamps. As in, there should be a little "Mine-hut" within a random mineshaft with one miner who can trade. What about that?
maybe he could fight back against mobs with his pickaxe if he does get attacked? He might be expecting to fight when he goes into the abandoned mineshaft alone... He might ask for some potions to help keep himself alive down there or a new pickaxe to keep mining.
What about the chance of a small village/holdout generating in mineshafts so you can get more trade options? maybe it can't occur within a given range of a spawner and is lit up with torches to keep mobs from spawning too nearby?

Yeah, that's similar to what I said, for them having their own room in abandoned mineshafts. Unless you mean huts randomly generated in caves like dungeons, in which case, I originally intended for them to only spawn in mineshaft, though to make it more widespread, yet still rare, and keep mineshafts abandoned seems like a better idea

Not a bad idea, then there'd be more trades and if the miner dies, you still got a couple
Another thing that would be cool to add to this idea is that any zombie villager that is cured underground below a specific Y coordinate, or in a mine shaft, would become a miner.

I meant one maximum, not one guaranteed, I'll correct it
