I have a proposal for a function in-game to switch between difficulties.
Current Issues when switching difficulty:
We have to go back to the main menu
Everyone is kicked from the game
Some enemies and mobs spawn/despawn when the game is exited and reloaded
Everybody must rejoin the game after the switch
Chunks may need to reload for players
Players may not be in a suitable environment for the reload and be immediately attacked
My idea is to have a sliding bar that will have an option for Peaceful, Easy, Normal, and Hard that can be changed by the host in the options tab of a game. After an option has been selected, it would do a quick screen much like the auto-save screen, and the difficulty would be changed afterwards. Players wouldn't have to leave the game and the world would still be open and loaded. This option would have several uses:
In RPG worlds, the setting could be set to peaceful when entering towns. This would eliminate the need for excessive lighting and make a town actually feel like a safe zone.
When in a pinch, a player could switch to a lower difficulty ensuring survival.
In Creative, it would be much easier to see where monsters spawn when building maps and to see where lighting is needed.
Prevents players from leaving and joining multiple times and smoother experience.
I am currently building a Destiny server. I nearly have the main tower done and am working on building the city below it. Since it is built as a near remake, there are multiple points in the tower that are poorly lit on purpose, but spawn several enemies. If this idea could be implemented, when players are in my game, I would change the difficulty to peaceful when everyone is in the tower, and then change it to normal or hard when everybody is in the wilderness or missions. This would help my server so much because the transition would be so much smoother and people wouldn't have to leave and join.
I am open to any opinions, criticism, and questions. If anybody knows if this would be too hard or if it would be a simple fix, that would be appreciated also, as I have no idea if I should keep my hopes up for this type of option. My gamertag is oi NOBLE io if anyone would like to add me also. Playing lots of MC, Destiny, CoD, and the Master Chief Collection (:
The game would still need to reload (Almost like an autosave) when you changed the difficulty. I'm still open to his idea though.
By the way, mobs don't spawn on impartial blocks, such as stairs or slabs (They can't be upside down), and they won't spawn on blocks with transparency, such as ice, glass or leaves.
I have thought about the slabs and transparent blocks, but it would throw off many of the decorations doing it that way. Thank you for your tips and support though!

There are problems with this idea. The first is written in your post. Players can change difficulty to ensure survival. If I get caught exploring and it becomes night, all I would have todo is change the difficulty to peaceful and now I dont have to Make a paniced run through the woods avoiding creapers. I see it being used as an exploit too much.
perhaps a creative mode "safe zone banner" would be more effective. and can only be set up while in creative.

I don't see it as an exploit, the only person you are cheating when you do this is yourself. All it does is make it less of a hassle to change the difficulties. You can still exit when you find yourself cornered, change the difficulty and come back in.

Nightwalker explained in a post below as well, that regardless of whether is it in game or not- it is just as easy for someone to exit the game when in danger, switch to peaceful, then come back. This just takes the hassle out of doing it. People are going to do that regardless lol.

how is it "just as easy"? It would be much easyer to switch it in game.
you ou could be mining, turn around and see a creeper. In panic you pause the game. Oh look, a little slide bar that if you push to the left, that creeper will be gone.
I think you have misunderstood my original view. I am wanting the slider IN GAME... but I was saying to avoid monsters/exploit it is just as easy to change difficulty either way. It is just as easy, just much more time consuming! I probably wasn't very clear on that last post, but make sure you read my ORIGINAL post as this is my thread and your post is the exact same feelings that I have lol...
