I've been lurking around here since Minecraft first released on 360 and only now that the details of the mash-up packs have been released have I been inclined to sign-up and post.
First of all, I'm disappointed with these mash-ups. Frankly I couldn't care less about Mass Effect. It has nothing to do with Minecraft what-so-ever. Nor do any other 'mash-ups' based on various other videogame licences. All I've wanted for the 360 version of Minecraft for a long time is Adventure Mode. I look on with jealousy at the PC version, what with fan-made adventure maps, and "Race for the Wool" maps, "Walls", "Cluster-Chunk" and various other PvP maps and playstyles. These are a big reason for Minecaft's on-going success in general because they offer new ways to play Minecaft.
If I wanted to play Mass Effect, or Skyrim or whatever else they come out with, I will play those games. I understand of course many others are excited about these mash-up packs but for me they hold little or no interest.
4J Studios tweeted a while ago that they were looking at various PvP ideas for inspiration for the 360 version and I hoped this would mean downloadable maps like the ones I mentioned above that can be played split-screen 1v1 or split-screen 2v2 against another team, or even perhaps 4v4 with friends vs another team. It feels as though if we haven't received these, or at least some information about these by now, then they simply will not be coming to 360 at all.
I understand there may be issues with Microsoft's long list of restriction on fan-made content, but I see no reason why 4J Studios could not build, for example, three different "Race for the Wool" maps and offer them as a pack for downloading for a small fee. All that would be needed in addition is some type of basic match-making system. Even if 4J Studios didn't have the time or resources to do this themselves, surely they can enlist some map-builders to develop map packs that can then be offered on all platforms for a small fee.
I want new ways to play Minecraft, not themed worlds based on other video games.
Feel free to flame. As I have already acknowledged, I understand that many of you are excited for this but I can't help but feel these mash-ups really don't add anything in terms of gameplay.
PS: I do have a plenty-powerful desktop PC on which to pay Minecraft, but it took me weeks to convince my girlfriend that she can in fact learn to use an Xbox 360 controller. The last console she played on was SNES and she couldn't fathom why anyone would need so many buttons on a controller! And anyway, I only play Minecraft splitscreen with her now and that's not possible on PC. Nor am I about to spend another $1200 building an extra desk-top just so she can play with me.
Adventure Mode was not added to the PC until version 1.3.1... so, all anyone can really say for sure is that it just wasn't brought forward ahead of schedule.
Hmmm... I see you are correct. Fair enough. But still, why not some downloadable map packs or something. I mean seriously, we have what, 7 skin packs or however many it is. How much of that time could've been spent developing new gameplay options? I've changed my skin once just to see how they work and haven't bothered to change it back. In fact, it's hardly even crossed my mind. Why would it, it's just me and my gf in our world, I don't care what I look like and we both wear armor most of the time so who cares.
How do you think Adventure Mode will be implemented considering the issues they have, or may have, with user-created content. Will we even have Adventure Mode implemented at all now that 4J may be going off in their own direction. Do you think they chose this point in development to go their own way in order to avoid having to implement Adventure Mode?
I kindda get what your getting at, I'd like to play some the really awesome maps that are going around the PC right now. Most notably the maps made by Hypixel. I think that Mash-up packs are a step in the right direction, considering they come with a pre-made world. Who knows, we could very well see Adventure mode before the end of the year.

The whole point of a "Mash-Up Pack" is to combine Minecraft with another game. It's why its called a "mash-up" pack. They said they'll release other texture packs that will also include things like mob skins and such, so its alright.

I thought mob skins would've been included at least with the texture pack. I still buy the mash up pack to try it out, might actually be a sight for sore eyes. But I did feel my excitement drop when I heard it was Mass Effect themed.
I've seen heaps of awesome texture packs that I would've rather had seen, but there is still plenty of time for them to do that.

They still said that mob skins will happen in other texture packs, just not with Mash Up Packs. They've only shown the mash-up pack so far, no texture packs. And I highly doubt, and always have, that when they do texture packs that they'd use previously existing texture packs like dokucraft or whatever. I'm pretty sure they'll all be their own texture packs.

There is really very little point in speculating about all of this at this point in time. Business is business and the public are certainly not going to be made privy as to what policy-type negotiations may be ongoing among the various parties involved - Microsoft, Mojang, 4J, and, possibly, the various creators of popular adventure maps, mods, and now Sony. I'm perfectly happy to just do my part and continue to just enjoy the game... and let them worry about what direction to take it in to keep it profitable for all of them. We'll see when the time comes.
Mash Up Packs huh? What's the point in having a Mass Effect theme if the mobs don't have textures that match it.. I know, I know.. The point is supposed to be both Minecraft and Mass Effect textures at the same time... My question is, is that a cool idea? I don't think so.

Oh well, too each his own.
Actually they retextured more blocks, food, etc then the what, 28 mob skins? While there are a lot of mobs and I would've liked some Alien Cows, there are more things they retextured then the mobs in the game.
My Xbox isn't even registering any texture or mash-up packs. Do you need live gold or something?
I believe the release of the first one isn't until sometime tomorrow (Wednesday). Although some parts of the globe are already working on Wednesday, I think it's still a little early even for those time zones to have the release. I also believe you can purchase DLC if you have an Xbox Live Silver account.
"Anyway race for wool maps? why cant u just make ur own, not too difficult. we need maps with super high creativity, to the level that professionals have."
You're right, it's probably not too difficult. And I certainly would at least attempt to make one myself if I could upload it to a server somewhere and be able to play against other people. It won't be much fun if I know where all the traps are and the way to get around all the obstacles, nor will it be much fun if it's just me and my girlfriend playing with no option to play against randoms. Plus, the beauty of user-made maps is other people have ideas that you've not thought of. It's easy just to copy someone else's creations, but it's a different thing entirely to download a map not knowing exactly what it's about and exploring.
"You know the game can run on toasters right? Sure, it's unoptimized but it certainly doesn't need the power it takes to run new AAA games on Ultra."
Yep, this is true. But I see little point in saving $300 - 400 on costs and having a new PC which will be outdated in the next 12-24 months. Plus, I live in apartment and don't have room for another computer desk + chair, etc. Unless I sacrifice our lounge, and I can't see my gf agreeing to that. And anyway, given the option of spending $600 - 800 building another PC in addition to the one I already have or spending that money to go on a holiday somewhere, well - that's an easy decision. Even if I only spend $500 on a PC, that's still an awful lot of money just to play 1 game. I love Minecraft but no game is worth that.
The biggest weak-point with Minecraft on 360 is the lack of servers. I consider this a crucial problem. The 360 version has developed more than sufficient revenue to support servers. I would love it if I could load up Minecraft and have the option on the menu screen to drop into a game of "Walls" or whatever. It would give the game a lot more variation than simply playing the same game but pretending I'm in Halo and that my bow isn't a bow but is an energy rifle, even though it functions just like a normal bow. I'm 32 years of age, not 7.
You don't need to be a savant to see that we'll get a run of these mash-up packs based on various game licences. Skyrim will most likely be next (which actually may include a quite good texture pack) and who knows what else. But you can be sure there will be 5 - 10 of these things.
As I said, I understand a lot of you are excited by this, but I can't help but feel the excitement will be short-lived when you realise it's just the same game with the same mechanics and the same mob AI and the same crafting and the same goals (ie build shelter, gather resources and survive). I will definitely play the trial of the mash-up pack, but unless it provides something new in terms of gameplay then I won't be terribly interested.
Hmmm. I quite agree. Please take into consideration the amount of work 4J has put into this. While mass effect wouldn't be my first choice for a mashup pack either, this is just their first one. I think that if you want a more minecraft style texture pack, you should wait until the custom made texture pack. And yeah, I'm pretty sure this wont be happening. Why don't you just get Xbox Live Gold and join a Walls game or a RftW game? It would pretty much be the same as all the DLC that would come out if 4J created this option.

GLaDOS, Genetic Life-form and Disk Operating System.
I know I bought the mass effect, but really dont ever use it besides for the first day it was out. I would rather just have everything pushed forward to the next update and just pay for that.
Agreed. I was curious about this first one, but after using it I can safely say that I will never buy a mash-up pack, ever. Even if the next one is based on the greatest video game ever made, I couldn't be less interested. You'd think after such a long wait for new textures that 4J would have given us something that the majority of players would be interested in (a more realistic texture pack, etc.), but you would be wrong.
But hey, it's all good. I've also owned MCPE for about two years, so I fully expect to be disappointed with Minecraft on every system but PC.

4J has stated that they are still waiting on getting the legalities of using certain PC-based texture packs sorted out; so they probably decided to release Mass Effect because they had been given the legal rights to everything involved with it... rather than releasing nothing at all. They may eventually have to resort to designing their own, more conventional texture pack if they can't get the rights to legally release a PC-based one; but I also think they really don't want to spend the time effectively recovering ground that the community texture packs have already covered. This Mass Effect mash-up was clearly something the PC community hadn't tried yet.

There is separate people at 4J who work on artwork. So having skins does not slow down production at all. My guess, neither will texture packs.

I'm in total agreement with you my friend! I've been building this (work in progress still) with the mass effect texture... imagine with a Halo one (:
