I think the new gravel texture is awful. It looks more like studded stone than loose gravel. Maybe the grains were too small on the old one (*Maybe*) but now it certainly doesn't look like something I'd wanna use a shovel on, never mind use decoratively as a walkway.
Don't get me wrong. I mean no offense to the creator of the texture and I have no problem with updates/change. I think the new gravel just lacks character. It's very similar to Stone now, and is also lighter overall. The pattern is simpler than it was before, making for a backwards movement in quality. It looks solid, not granular as it did before.
I'd like a reversal to the old, or a redo of the texture.
I like it. It looks much smoother and fits in with the rest of the textures of the game. The old texture looked like someone ate a bunch of pixel and then regurgitated them onto a 16x16 pixel block.
I really don't like the new texture, as it reminds me of how metal-like it looks.
Also Not only does it blend in with stone, but is too close to cobble, so making at a first glance seem like there is a dungeon there. With the new lighting they introduced, which is a little darker, makes things even more difficult to distinguish. I am sure those with a HD tv do not notice much in the lighting changes, as they have a crisper picture and lighter overall, but it is more noticed on a SD tv. Well the difference between this current update and the last that is. (this is not mentioning the flat out lighting glitch lots of people have been troubled by, me included.)
I don't mind that they changed the texture, but it could have been something that at least looks like gravel and not some metal or stone/cobble look to it. The original texture even though it looked like some one puked the pixels up, like what mustache said, it at least had the feel that is was gravel, since in a way that is what gravel looks like a puked up grey scale bits. What it is now is more like a pebble texture if you were to say it looks similar to gravel if any. Pebble and gravel are 2 different things.
I know I would not get use to it since I never really liked it on the pc edition, and why would I like it on the xbox version.
Someone mentioned texture packs, well to buy a texture pack just for the original gravel makes no sense... As that is the only texture I would primarily change. A texture pack is suppose to change more than 1 texture, hence it being a pack. Although if it was a pack that offered old textures along with a couple other texture variants then I would buy it. Hopefully they will change it back or to something that looks more like gravel that isn't close up.
Gravel is not really suppose to look smooth, it is suppose to be grainy mixture of bits, hence what gravel actual is. Well that is my take on this single texture...:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

I had much the same feeling. To me the new texture looks more like corrugated metal than gravel. (I had the same reaction when this texture was added to the PC version.)
I don't like the new gravel texture. I confused it for cobblestone as well as the fact it just looks weird. To be it is currently the weirdest looking texture in minecraft, the old texture was definatly better. Gravel should be small pellets which is what gravel tecnically is, not large rocks.
I don't see how people are confusing it for other blocks. It looks nothing like Cobblestone...
Cobble
Gravel
If I had a picture of it, I would show you the 100+ year old rock wall outside of Western State Hospital. In several parts it looks simalar to the new minecraft gravel than the old texture or cobblestone.

I wasn't aware we were talking about real life cobblestone. I thought we were talking about Minecraft cobblestone, which looks like the texture I posted above.

Honestly I don't mind the new texture, the old one wasn't bad either but, we really DO need texture packs on the xbox, hopefully we can get more than just the 16x textures, I really like the added detail you get from the 64x+ textures.
I can't stand it. I have an older SD tv, and can barely tell them apart. I know, an HD game on an SD tv, but who cares.
I also hate how it looks with things now. It doesn't look like a good village pathway anymore, in my opinion.

Pretty much every point I have against the new gravel has been made here, so I'll just summarize
1. It looks more like diamond plate or stones stuck in concrete than it does actual gravel. I really liked the pixel puke, so sue me.
2. The color being much more in line with cobble and smooth stone actually makes it worse in my opinion, so gray, dreary and less distinguishable.
3. It looks like garbage in every role it had prior to this change.
I never thought I'd create a forum account to nitpick a single 16x16 texture but I actually really liked the old gravel and have used it for certain projects, such as the roadbed for my entire minecart railway and expansions to my village roads. Where it really looked good underneath the rails before and along the walking paths, now it's just...so...bleh. PLEASE give us the old texture back, or at least the option to pick which one we want.
The old texture looked distinctly different from the stone textures, now it is the same grey shade.
I actually don't mind the new gravel in its natural settings underground, but it's ruined the aesthetic of my pathways.
The only real option I have though would be to change to sand, because I use gate systems that rely on blocks affected by gravity.
I'll cope I'm sure but it just shows how valuable some simple texture options for players will be!
(map sharing still most important feature that's missing.)
What do you mean by map sharing?
Do you mean map as in what shows the lay of the land?
Or map is in Seed?
Because if you mean map, every time someone jumps on my map I go give them my map which is completely filled in and updated. So you can share maps. Even for The End and Nether
Any chance of getting the old gravel back?
Maybe they'll change it back if the community demand is large enough.
Edit: This could be just a case of not wanting things to change, as I didn't care for the last gravel texture when they changed it
