I just got Minecraft for PC last night (been a console user for years) and you STILL can get Minecraft Windows 10 edition free after you purchase the Java version. One would think it should work the other way around, but no. Why? I direct you to Microsoft's official response.

So i know if you have already bought normal minecraft you can get windows 10 edition for free, does it work the other way around?
No it does not.
In fact, I'm pretty sure the "free" period for Win10 is over too.

If you bought the Windows 10 version and not the normal version to get the free update contact xbox support , they will fix it.
