So I decided to try playing a bit on the Windows 10 Beta edition of Minecraft.
The only reason I downloaded and installed it was that it was free.
This far I'm not impressed. And I need an answer to a couple of questions.
A
How do I enable the scroll-wheel on my mouse to scroll between the nine hotbar-slots?
I've tried to look in the options, but either it doesn't exist there, or I'm blind.
B (attachment shows the skin)
How do I disable the "overlay" on the Skin, so that it is invisible, just like in the real Minecraft version?
Again, I've been through all the options (there are VERY few, actually) on the skins page in-game.
I can only "change skin" or buy skin packs (don't know who would actually buy a skin when they can make it themselves, but that's another matter).
There is no option to turn the outer layers off...

How does the game update itself?
I mean, there are no real launcher on the Win 10 edition. So nowhere to show the different versions, or choose whitch one I'd like to play.
Would be nice to know how to play the version I want, instead of having Microsoft "force-updating" the game, like they do with the Windows 10 OS itself.
Help with this is appreciated. Especially how to enable the mouse-wheel. Without it I'm spending seconds just to switch between a Pickaxe and a Torch.
This is such a bad thing for me, I'm basically not able to perform at anything close to a decent level on this version of the game, unfortunately.
I'm just so dependent on the mouse-wheel it's scary. And no, I'm not going to "train" myself into using the number-keys. They are way too awkwardly placed on the keyboard. Only numbers one through five are reasonably easy to reach. I would be limited to using those five slots if I can't figure out how to enable mouse-scrolling.
Thanks in advance to those coming up with the answers I need!
And happy Minecrafting, on whatever version you prefer.
A. Gee, if my scroll wheel didn't work for selecting items, I'd be upset too.... but it does. The question is- what's wrong with your mouse? You never mentioned what mouse you're using. Is it a "standard" mouse that works "normally" with Windows 10? Maybe something in the mouse settings of Windows 10 itself or in your mouse's software?
B. What "real" MC version? Every version of MC is different from the others, and every one of them is a "real" MC version. Each version has it's own "set" of features the others don't. No, Win10 isn't like the java version..... but the java version isn't like Win10, either!
Anyway, to answer your question- you can't "disable" the overlay(?) of a Win10 skin and make it "invisible" (you can't "hide" that you're wearing armor). You can only switch to another skin.
C. Until this last update, the game always updated itself automatically through the Windows Store. With this update, you need to go the Windows 10 Beta Edition page of the Windows Store and hit the "Update" button.
Sorry, you can't "select" the version you want to play. (I don't want to play a "old" version without the latest additions. For instance, why would I choose to play without pistons?)
Thanks for the thorough reply.
A - I have the Nexus SM-8500B "silent" mouse, that's not really silent. The wheel squeeks a lot. But the right/left buttons are silent. And it does work on every application on the computer (obviously only applications that have mouse-support, but that fact I take for granted is understood by context), with ONE exception. The Windows 10 Beta Minecraft edition. Since that is the case, I was looking for a setting that I may have gotten wrong. But I haven't found any in-game at all. Unfortunately for me.
It works with the original Minecraft (java) version. I realize "original" is a better word than "real" when describing this Notch-version of the game. A little sloppy on my part there, I'm afraid.
B - Well, then I think I'll just have to live with looking weird. My skin looks alright in the original (java) version of Minecraft, but sadly not on the Win 10 edition. I take it from your response that the outer layer is the Armour-layer and the inner layer the Skin-layer in Win 10. Weird that it doesn't work the same as the Java-version for something so user-specific as custom uploaded skins.
C - Ah. Then it will only update whenever I visit the store, and choose it myself. Good to know.
And, yes, I want to play older versions sometimes (at least on the only MC version I've spent a decent amount of time on, the original java version). That's why I like the java-launcher that lets you choose which version you want by having several profiles.
I suspect that with each update for the Win 10 version, I'd want to play a not-so-up-to-date version from time to time as well.
Of course, I do understand the excitement for new versions and new stuff included. However, "old" versions are just as much fun. Sometimes a necessity, if you run mods that are not updated to the latest versions of the game.
A- Yea, there's no in-game settings for mouse, other than "sensitivity". That's why I suggested maybe you can use the Nexus software to help? You might also try another mouse and see if that one works ok. That way you'll know if it's the Nexus mouse causing the problem or not.
B- A lot of people think Win10 is a "replacement" for the java version and expect it to be and work exactly the same. Sorry, it is it's own game, and expecting to be "just like" the java version will get you in trouble. In other words, good or bad, "it is what it is".
C- The Good News is: you can decide if you want to update or not, and when. The Bad News is: once updated you can't go back. Also, since there's no mods for Win10, you don't have to worry about version compatibility.
