my 2 kids play split screen Minecraft on the Xbox one. Could I join them online with my laptop Windows 10 Minecraft. The Xbox had a different live and Microsoft account then the Xbox.
The only two versions that can play with each other is Win10 and PE. (It's a Minecraft-design thing, not an OS thing).
Console versions are specific to that specific console. Even different consoles can't play together.
However, what you can do is play splitscreen on a console.
Our family are getting into MC and after several purchases we realized the limitations (or lack thereof) of platform compatibility. We have MC on XBOX, Win10, PE, and IOS....sigh....
People would love to play a single, "full" version of MC on any platform they want, and play with anybody else that's using any other platform (and any OS). Not only that, they want all the features of all the versions.... including mods, etc..
Of course, that's not possible. There's different versions (each with their own features and limitations) for a reason, and each version has it's place. People can't get it through their heads that there isn't "a" MC anymore- there's several of them, they're all different, and one isn't "better" than the others. The "best" one depends on the person. Some want this, some that, some the other. No version completely satisfies everyone, but there's a version that's best for you.

Your comment should be posted in the FAQ I say the same thing about phone arguments wanting to know the best phone out there, "the best phone is the one works best for you!" Have a great day.
For instance, and this is just me, but I like the Win10 version the best.
And some of you say, "But it doesn't have ________!".
So?
If another version works better for you, great, play it. But I prefer the one that does have the features I want, and doesn't have the junk I don't.
I concur. I'm a casual gamer and I love how Win10 version ties to your/my Xbox Live account and get them achievements Plus I can't wait until both Win10 and PE play in the same sandbox (Realm).../crosses finger!
Win10 (Minecraft: Windows 10 Beta Edition) is only for PC's, and tablets/smartphones that run the Windows 10 operating system. PE is just for iOS and Android tablets/smartphones. What's cool is Win10 & PE are the same game with the same features and can play together.
However, console versions are different and have different world sizes and features. Consoles can't play with Win10 (even though they both use the "Windows 10" as the operating system). Either he's gonna have to get an Xbox One, or his friends are going to have to get Win10.
Basically it says you can play Win10 with PE over LAN.
And you can play with your Live friends online (Windows 10 has a Xbox Live app that you can add "friends" to).
It does not say anything about a Xbox console. (Don't let the "Xbox" part confuse you- "Xbox Live" and "Xbox consoles" are two completely different things! One is Microsoft's server, the other a console.)
Sorry, but there's only two MC editions (versions) that can play together- Win10 and PE. They're designed to play together with same features, world sizes, etc. Heck, not even the 2 Xbox consoles (360 and One) can play with each other(!), nor can the 2 Sony consoles (ps3 & ps4).
I know.
"Drat".
But you either spend about $300 for a Xbox One (please don't bother with the old 360!) OR he convinces his friends to spend $10 each (or free if they already own the java version of MC) and get Win10. Keep in mind they all have to be on the same console or Edition of MC (ie, Win10) to play together.
The Good News is, if you go ahead and get the One, he can play other games on it besides MC. There's also the (very) slim possibility that in the future (maybe) the One can play with Win10- but I'm not holding my breath!!!... and neither should you.

Sorry, no.

p.s. to the OP, sorry about hijacking your thread
windows 10 and pe are cross platform compatible
Not true. (Where did you read that?)
(Darn this is an old thread).

You have to read it very carefully.
