Heres a "suggestion" being able to give dogs more commands than just follow or sit like attack which would be as it sounds dog/s will attack any animal or monster that comes close to them except for creepers they will growl at them. then you have protect dog/s will attack any monster that gets close to you or attacks you again except for creepers they will growl at them.
They have attack command, you just have to hit someone/mob- but I like your idea of 'protect'. That way they could be sitting instead of ALWAYS getting under your feet or pushing you off of something- Hell, I'd be happy if they'd stop playing in the fireplace!

this is how it would work, under the follow /sit commands you have attack added. when activated the pet will stand where he/she is and wait any monster/animal (except creepers, they will growl at them) that comes within range (0~10 block range maybe) the dog /pet will attack till its dead or pet dies if you dog /pet kills monster/animal it will returns to the spot where you gave the attack command.

Well.. things like zombies already make noise. To a lesser extent.. skeletons. SO.. it might be useful for skeletons I'll give you that. Cause skeletons don't really make noise unless they shoot an arrow at you.
Thinking outside the b(l)ox
Haha 16 slaves digging that giant trench you were trying to build to bedrock... hell yeah lol
How would it work though? There's only so many buttons on the controller... Would their need to be a dog whistle or something?
