To explain simply.. the D-Pad appears to do nothing.
I think on xbox it allows you to move around the same way with the analog sticks (but who would want to do that?)
So... Why not have the inventory doubled... and used the d-pad to toggle through it as opposed to L1/R1, or in combine with L1/R1? Because that way you could go up and down in the inventory as well as left and right.
For the sake of it.. I would say have this maybe be toggle-able option, because even I see it being okay just the way it is.. But for some extra customization people don't want to be fooling around with
Flaw:
This would make a HUD that's already big and annoyingly in the way more in the way.
Pro:
This could make way for HUD customization? Maybe you want hunger vertically on the right, health vertically on the left etc?

Yeah, or make the d-pad a Hot-Key button like Terraria. Hot-key your sword to the up button, pick south, shovel east, and block of choice west. A player could be building and hears a zombie moan. They just press up and sword is ready. Player kills zombie, presses left, and continues to build. Simple and elegant, nice idea Juno!
