The common canary song bird has been used by miners around the world as a early warning device for centuries. Canaries would sing or die if dangerous gases built up in a mine. A song bird mob that changed to a canary after taming would be historically correct and fit into the "MINEcraft" motif. They could trill if a player is digging next to lava or send out a song if a creeper is with in, say, 15 blocks give or take of the player. Players could breed different colors, made harder then ocelots to tame, and would perch on ones shoulder if uncaged causing some loss of perception.
