Hi, I've been enjoying the 1.3 update and wanted to have someone in my house connect to a single-player world of mine using the Open to LAN feature. However, I've run into trouble doing this, and was hoping you guys could help me out.
Here are the issues:
- When I Use Open to LAN, my LAN server doesn't show up on other's server list, even though they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as me.
- When someone else on my network open their world to LAN, it shows up for me, but when I go to join it, it gets stuck on "Connecting to the server", and eventually times out.
I've looked around and haven't found anyone with this issue, so if you know anything I can do to fix the issue, please let me know.
Additional information:
- All LAN features work on other computers connected to my network, so it is most likely an issue with my computer.
- I have hamachi installed, I know this messes with network settings and whatnot so this may be a problem, not sure though.
I have found that I need to disable the Windows firewall on BOTH the computers. Only after I did this would the world show on the remote computer (and be connectable to).

I'm going to guess that the IP address your MC reports as being "open" is very different from the ones the other PC's use.
MC 1.3 currently has an issue where it choose One IP address to use, and doesn't always choose the one that will work.
I'm not sure why you can't connect to the other MCs though, as that would seem to be unrelated.
Can anyone connect to another MC over your LAN? If you are all using WiFi , you may need to configure your WAP to allow local connections. (WiFi to LAN/WiFi). Some only allow WiFi to WAN by default.
I had problems with this to. I found out what the problem was. Some of the minecraft folders was blocked by the firewall. So you may need to unblock the minecraft folders

Good luck.

NO!!! NO!!! NOOOO!!!!
Do not disable Windows firewall, just make an exception in it for Minecraft! Disabling the firewall is a really, really stupid idea, I speak from experience..... disabling the firewall is like saying "Look, I have a fancy $700 machine that I am going to let anybody have access to!"

Disabling the Windows firewall is only an issue if your computer is connected DIRECTLY to the internet. For the vast majority of MC players, their computers are on a LAN administered by a Wifi router (not connected directly to the internet).
There is a firewall in the router. It is that firewall that should never be disabled. Disabling the Windows firewall makes the computer accessible to only those computers on the same network (which is the home LAN).
With the Windows firewall disabled, the computer is still safe from the outside world because of the firewall in the router - plus the IP translation functions that all routers must perform.
I'm pulling my hair out on this network setup. I can see the server from the other machine. But everything keeps timing out. The it would be nice if they added some network options for setting time outs, and fixed ports, and etc.

timeouts would probably indicate that it is a firewall issue. Firewalls often just drop packets on the floor (so you don't get an "refused" error, you get a timeout instead). The default network timeouts are long enough.

I've tried this exact same thing on a different network, same results, so I'm confident it has to do with my computer, not the network I'm on
What happens when you disable the Windows firewall on both computers? I found I had to do this to get the LAN worlds visible and accessible.
