Hello minecrafters everywhere. My laptop recently died last week and I think it was because of Minecraft.
DONT ASK FOR PIX CAUSE I CANT TAKE PIX FROM A LAPTOP THAT DIED!!!
This occured friday. I was using snapshot 12w22a
I was loading up a new world on minecraft, it was a normal day, and my computer was functioning fine. Then when the world generated, well, much of the world was nonexistent. There was only spawn area and a sea of nothingness around it. No chunks. So, I spawned on what I thought at the time was a natural skyblock! I was wondering what the heck was going on and enabled creative to fly around. I flew through where there should be normally generated chunks to check if it was lag and I flew right threw just fine as if everythink was normal. Then, I placed a block... and all hell started to break loose
As soon as I placed the block, all the chunks that appeared to be missing appeared for a split second, and then, the computer started going into sleep mode all by itself. So I turned it back on, got to the login screen, and then it went into sleep mode AGAIN with no input from me. This happened a couple of times so I decided to manually restart the computer by holding the power button. Then, the laptop wouldn't turn on...
I tried some ways to get it to work again, and when I blew on the battery connecters, it just started to work again. Thinking I solved the problem, I turned it on, got past the login screen, and into my account and for a few minutes, it worked fine. when i looked at my hotbar, my Norton security suite said something was still wrong with the computer. I started a virus scan and a couple minutes later, it started going into sleepmode AGAIN!!!
I dont know how, but i think minecraft broke my computer. I even opened it up (I opened it up before and fixed it myself) and I just couldnt figure out what was wrong with it. Everything seemed to be normal to me so I called an expert. He looked at it and said that the battery latches were loose, the AC power connector was loose as well,(i already knew of this) and there was a problem with the harddrive. i dont know what seemed to cause these problems, but I hope this doesnt happen on my new Computer. here are the specs of my old computer
Just sound's like a hard drive failure. All components have a life span, based on the specs you listed it seems as though it has reached the end of its life span. You didn't say how long you have had the computer, but it appears to be a dated system.
I have had hard drives fail sooner than I think you have had the computer. You got a good run out of the system, just time to update
Oh and to cure your worries. I have had minecraft installed on 5 different computers Ive played on. Ive installed many mods on each (more than I should've) and played many hours a day through multiple people. Never has a computer I had failed with minecraft on it.
This included a system bought back in 2005 with similar specs to your's. Dont worry about your new pc
I had it for 4 years. Well, 2 years for me. My cousin gave it to me who got it from his cousin who got it from working for Obama. It exchanged hands alot...
also, i hated that harddrive. it sucked, and was only 80 gigabytes of memory as you can see. now, i have 231 gigabytes of memory on my new laptop as well as 4 gigs of ram

also, it doesn't really explain why the world loaded like it did.

As a pure guess I would say it tried to save the world (or read) to the hard drive sectors that were corrupt, or going corrupt. It couldn't save them so you got what you saw. This is the best logical explanation I can come up with.
Sadly, yes. Luckly, I was able to recover the entirety of my .minecraft folder and all of my important documents :D. Also, the expert I took it to scanned the HDD for viruses and he didn't find any. Took care of it. Always defraged it every weekend, cleaned off unnecessary files, made sure it was in tip top shape. Lets hope this laptop will last longer

Best advice is to backup important files regularly. At least once a week, if not sooner. In the event it crashes in the future all you will need to do is buy a new hard drive, replace the old hard drive, Install windows, drivers etc. But you still keep your most important documents without having to pay for hoping to get them recovered and you won't have to buy a new computer.

That's good advice, but unfortunately, I decided it would not be worth it to buy a brand new HDD for my old CPU. It already has undergone various repairs such as Motherboard Replacement (spilled water on it >_<), GPU replacement, HDD replacement, LCD panel replacement, and a Keyboard replacement. The list goes on and on. The motherboard, GPU, and HDD replacement was $140 and same with the LCD panel. The keyboard was $27.99. Pretty soon, I would have pretty much rebuilt the entire computer lol. Just not worth it at this point. Besides, my new computer runs Minecraft MUCH better and it has Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and 4 gigabytes of ram and has an ATI Radeon graphics card in it so I am happy :D.

I was actually referring to your new computer, for backing up the files. Crashes can happen at any moment without warning. It is better to be prepared in the unlikely event it does crash. I have went through replacing nearly ever component before as well. I decided to get a better computer after a while
Glad you found a computer that runs minecraft well, and you are happy with it.
Hardware MB Failure. Motherboard Chip Computer Overdrive preventive measures. (Not refering to my MC username)
It automaticly goes to sleep-mode to no it burn the whole chip information (it will die). That is what you call a 8==D moment. It 's because of the overdrive the Minecraft chunk generating creates on some PC-s/Mac-s, Linuxes/ Or any OS because of the Drivers you use. Better drivers (OpenGL is the most important), better the FPS, Performance. And less crashes and overdrives... I'm a student. We actually had a slow PC to perform something like this. PM for more info. And I see you have a new computer! I couldn't aford it, but after collage, I'll start game developing and get myself some CARS! And hook....Yup. Also MC works better on Mac-s.

Was it a hardware issue or did minecraft cause it?
