So in mid-December, I took a bit of a break from Minecraft for the holidays. I was reliably getting 100+ frames per second.
When I came back to it after Christmas, I was down to 4 fps. And I still am. Sometimes it gets up all the way up to 10, woo! I'm also seeing huge amounts of lighting errors , particularly on chests. (This was before 1.1, though it has continued once I updated.)
I have no idea what is causing all this. I've tried updating my drivers, updating Java, cleaning my registry, defragging my drive... Nothing helps. The game is virtually unplayable at this speed.

What's going wrong, and how can I fix it?
Have you tried a re-installation?
lag comes usually from slow internet or lack of memory-card space!
to reduce the lag go to options and then data settings where you have the ability to change the settings. heres a list of suggestive changes:
Render Distance: Short
Bobbing: off
Clouds: off
Graphic: fast
Hope this helps!
