I've been trying to place paintings on walls and now I'm only getting a solid black painting when I place it. I've tried multiple texture packs and not getting a single painting. Would this have to do anything with the lighting bug when you use a chest (your arm turns darker)? I backed up my 1.7.3 and did a fresh 1.8 install with some updated mods (as I've done in the past with no issue).
The solution to this is to remove the blocks above the painting. If you need a block, use glass.
For me, this fixes the "blackness" glitch on paintings. torches do nothing.
I had the same problem after the 1.8 update. It turns out that for me, the problem was caused by having a neighbouring block next to a painting. However, I'm not sure about your problem, because the screenshot shows a painting with no neighbouring blocks. Do you have any texture packs or mods? Have you been fiddling with minecraft.jar?

From what I've seen with 1.8 and the pre-release of 1.9, it is something of a lighting bug again like with the stone brick steps. 4x4 are nearly pitch dark in 1.8 but 1.9 fixes all of it, pretty much not needing torches anymore.
Got a pic now
