Minecraft 1.8 is impossible to play on mac 10.5.8, even with the in game download of 10.5.8 it still crashes with black screen after creating world is finished loading, the loaded map is even playable in 1.7.3 but 1.8 just removes the ability to play at all. I hope there will be a fix to this because why would mojang remove the ability to play when i had it with 1.7.3. I paid for a working game not one with 3 different updates that fail to make the game work on Leopard. And i don't want to hear update mac or change to windows I like my Mac leopard perfectly fine thanks.
Same here too, and it seems to be a problem for Mac OSX 10.4.11 as well. Unable to load maps in both 1.8 pre-releases and 1.8, even though I could play 1.7.3 perfectly fine.
Works on my 10.6 2nd gen mac Air. Fails on my 10.5 1st gen mac Air. Both ran 1.7.3 fine.
Naively fooling around with command line java shows a functionNotImplemented error from inside the GL library. Not sure if this is an OS-related graphics library thing, a Java version thing (mods never worked under 1.7.3 on the 10.5 system due to java versions either), or unsupported video hardware on the old mac Air now obsolete due to new lighting models.
Same problem here, EXACTLY the same. I have 10.5.8 and the only advice I've been given is to get a better laptop...
yeah I love my 10.5.8 but to have them 'update' a game but break it more than make it better is horrible. And some of the bugs reported are so major, how could they not think about exp orbs lagging servers and clients that is pretty damn obvious. And furnaces they seem to break every single update these things should not break in 'updates'. Is it so hard to play the game for a couple of minutes they would find an amazing amount of bugs. They have also apparently been working on this update for months how could they have so many problems with months of work
Really, with no mac under 10.6 playing Minecraft you'd think Notch or Jeb would have been alerted to it WAY before today (we're talking pre-release here). If I had a twitter account I'd spam their asses until they at least acknowledged and tried to fix it...
i have been trying to get on to them on twitter it appears that they are ignoring it

Mods have always worked for me, but the process wasn't exactly simple. Mojang should just let the modders update minecraft as they seem a lot more capable than they are!

You paid for early access to a game still in beta, bugs are likely as development continues. They'll fix the problems, you just need to give them a chance to work out the problems.

i paid for a game that actually works not for one that is totally unplayable, its been 3 updates and a couple of months and all they have managed to do is pretty much break the game
There's no Java update for 10.5.8 right now. None, I've checked. Also, I can't afford a new Mac right now, and even then I wouldn't go out to buy one just so I can play minecraft when I bought it for cheap.
Hopefully the problem will be fixed soon, just keep in mind that many of us have gone out of our ways to see if there's anything wrong with our Macs. There's nothing wrong with mine, believe me, I checked possible option and all's green on my end. It's the game that's busted.

Sounds like your computer specs cannot handle the game. That and your using a mac, just saying. The problem with java, is its not a code meant for this kind of thing. Mojang is sort of turning a screw with a hammer, but they cannot get a more efficient code because that would require totally recreating the game.

If they don't update for 10.5, then they should at least give us the option of keeping 1.7.3 on our systems. I'd rather have that then have nothing at all!

i can play 1.7.3 with 60fps and above but now 1.8 just crashes very similar to what happens when you incorrectly install a mod, i know java is not meant for it but look at the aether mod so many changes and it works fantastically and mojang updates game is filled with bugs and these aren't fixed before release, i can't go back to 1.7.3 either now :sad.gif:

You did not back up your minecraft.jar before you updated?
Also for those complaining about mac support, 1.8 just came out like an hour ago there is still going to be bugs, I mean for god sakes its really only 1 man working on it at the moment and that is jeb.
Also for those saying you bought it therefore it should work... No, not how it works. You bought a beta with the knowledge that at somepoint something would ****up, now grow up.

yep latest java, i could but that would take a while a 6gb download or paying 30 dollars for update disk
Hmm, I have windows, and I prefer Internet Explorer, any connection there?

i just don't like windows computers..
