So I know this question has been asked a million times, but I want to figure out how to fix it for my specific make of computer. The specs of my computer:
Model: HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC
Processor: Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @2GHz 2GHz
Installed RAM: 6.0GB
System type: 64-bit operating system
Graphics: Radeon HD 6490M
My computer is more than capable of playing games, but for some reason, it doesn't run Minecraft well. I would think it should be able to play on far render distance with fancy graphics, but when I try that, I get only around 10 FPS. I generally play on Far render, and Fast graphics, and get around 25 FPS, which is decent, but when I look over a large landscape, it goes down to about 15 FPS. My computer plays other games which are much more graphics-intensive, and runs beautifully. Why doesn't it do well with Minecraft?
And yes I've tried allocating more memory to Minecraft.

Studies have shown that 843,902,635 people are too lazy to read this number.
That's funny, I'm getting the same problem with the HP Pavillion I just bought. Although it is replacing a desktop that I used to run Minecraft with no problems on, it is much better on paper:
Processer - i7-2630QM
Mem - 8GB DDR3
Radeon Graphics
64 Bit OS.
I'm running the download version of Minecraft. Could it be the laptop graphics card? The Windows performace index gives it a higher score than my older desktop.
It looks like the DV7T uses dual video cards. you need to assign javaw.exe to use the ATI card. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with exactly how to do that, but it should be doable in the catalyst control center.
-To change the switchable graphics settings in the ATI Catalyst Control Center:
Click Start , type CCC in the search field, and then select CCC - Advanced from the search results list.
-Select Switchable Graphics from the menu in the Catalyst Control Center.
-Select a Recent Application and click the green or red button to change the default graphic solution from power-saving to high-performance.
-Or click Browse to find the executable file for the application you need to configure.
Click Apply to save the new settings.
Also note: Just below that, it looks like dv7-6100 laptops need a BIOS update for OpenGL to work.
