OK I have been finding allot of these threads and none have a solution to this same problem. Now lets get our heads together and solve it. Allot of people have payed for this game and cannot play it anymore. Please note that if the game played fine before a update then it's not the computer / fire wall or internet connection . I have seen allot of people say that "Get a new pc / more memory." And if the game plays fine with no problems in single player it's not java or vid card drivers. So we can all rule all these things out as a cause. It's gotta be something else.
First I must say that I could play flawlessly on multi player before the beta 1.3 update. No problems and no lag. And single player still runs flawlessly today.
My system
Processor: AMD Athlon 3000+ 1.81 GHz
Memory "RAM": 2.0 GB
Operating system: Windows XP home.
Browser:Fire fox and stand alone MC client
Type of internet connection:Cable high speed
How did it happen:Updated to MC b 1.3
Is java up to date? Yes
Problem: When I connect to ANY multi player server the world loads a few chunks and stops. OR the terrain does not load at all and I'm stuck in a free fall till I disconnect. these are servers i was able to play on flawlessly before the Beta 1.3 update can can still do on my other computer.
Things I have tried and failed to produce any results.
- Anti virus scan
- Anti malware scan
- Defrag hard drive
- Using different clients New / old / web browser
- Completely removing Minecraft and reinstalling a fresh new copy. NO MODS
- Rebooting PC / Router / Modem. "Since other computer connects with no problem then it's not any of these"
- Connecting directly to modem bypassing router.
- Searching Forums "No solution and now that search was removed it's even harder to find anything"
- Searching Google "No solution"
- Reformat of computer. "NEW HDD the old one was only 40 GB"

I understand, I don't randomly click links either.
This may be an extremely stupid response, but have you tried force updating or deleting the bin folder?
Or did you try and I failed to read the OP properly?
My computer - C: drive - Documents n' settings - Your folder - Application data - .minecraft
Then take the entire "bin" folder and stuff it in the recycling bin.

I'm going to keep suggesting this until someone else tests it: try running it in ubuntu 10.10.
I had horrible lag starting at 1.3. I switched to ubuntu to see if there was an improvement. Everything was fixed and have been having a blast since then.

The only difference other than a little bit of memory and hard ware of everyone's PC / laptops is the operating system. I am seeing allot of users with windows xp having this problem. All before bets 1.3 update ran fine and after beta 1.3 all died. It could be a bug in the game it's self or it could be related to a windows update. How ever my biggest source of information is refusing to give me anything. I wanted to know what if any updates was released on or just after feb 22 2011. For windows XP Because i remember being able to connect to multi player servers for about 2 days then it just died just after 1.3_01. I'm not sure if it was the game update or a windows update that broke the ability to connect to SMP servers.
And I'm still waiting for someone to tell me what a ubuntu 10.10. is... hint hint! ===> minorgrey
ubuntu is a distribution of linux. operating system.
Then this don't help Windows XP users.
I want to try something. I have a copy of the beta 1.2_02 of the game. Is there a server out there still using that version today? And if so what's the IP?
Tons of people are having this problem, yet no one seems to have much of a response but I've been personally trying to get people to give information so it Can be fixed (I have Windows 7 and yes I am affected)
Currently I've been trying to gather one piece of information, Do you have a Atheros based Network Card?

I never thought to check the network card. mainly it's because of on board.
It's a "Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000base-t" I'll disable it by disconnecting it and switching to a wireless usb card. and see what happens.

That's #5 on my attempt list.

EDIT
Same result with the wireless network card.
